The majority of my training has been in Korean styles, but I have to agree that Korean styles tend to be harder (ie, kicking, punching and blocking) whereas Chinese styles rely on absorbtion. Also, I have noticed that Korean styles tend to keep a greater distance where Chinese styles fight closer in. Again, theses are generalizations, and are only based upon my limited exposure to Chinese styles.
