The skills you learn will stay with you for a lifetime, the wrestling team members are by far, the highest conditioned atheletes in the school. Nobody trains all around stamina, cardio, strength, and power like the wrestling team. You will get stronger than ever before, and it will be fast, explosive strength. Weight lifting does not slow yuo down when it is done using proper training principles.
The guys on the wrestling team stick together like glue. There is no team that offers the comrederie that comes from daily one on one contact, each man helping the other practice and improve-for the betterment of the team.
In school, and after, if you got in a fight, the most you would have to worry about would be if someone bumrushed you and took you down. You had a chance with the football players, but if you came up against someone who was on the wrestling team, you were fuked. They would take you down so fast and hard, and once down, before you could react, they had you at their mercy. In a real fight, they were tops. These are skills that will always come in handy.
There is also the benefit of getting a wrestling scholarship to college.
With a solid HS wrestling backround, you can go into other "branches" of wrestling-collegiate, greco-roman,and of course, MMA fighters who were wrestlers always faired the best.
If I had known the direction my life would take me-30+ years in the Martial Arts, school owner and Sifu, I would definately had taken wrestling.
As far as not liking "jocks" or not getting along with them-don't sweat it. You will be one of them, so it will not be an issue. Trust me, it doesn't automatically make you stupid. |
