I don't know where they were getting wood that was still wet, but if you were doing the kick correctly then it is usually one of two other factors. The big one I see is when there is a knot right in the middle of the board. The board generally does not want to split right down the middle of a knot. The second deals with how the board is held. If it is allowed to 'give' it robs power from your strike (which is why speed breaks are tough). Keep trying, you'll get it.
