In the AAU the kids under 12 yrs. old must wear face shields in competition. Over 12 head gear is optional. The adults usually don't wear anything except gloves. I don't like the face shields. I think it gives a false sense of security. I like the face shields for full contact Arnis, Escrima or kali (Filipino stick fighting).
