For instance, at the Alabama Karate Circuit tournaments that I have been competing in, there is a group of about eight 'black belts' who come from a school in Mississippi and only compete in the adult point sparring division. While a few of them are respectful, nice guys who seem to know their stuff, several of them are completely disrespectful of their opponents as well as the judges and senior black belts observing the mathces. They hoot and hollar during other people's matches, call points from the sidelines, and strut around in the ring much like George Jefferson used to do on the TV show The Jeffersons. No joke there. Now these guys wear black belts, but are they really black belts? No way. Have they learned the humility and respect that a true black belt should have? Absolutely not.
So, while Seagal is an accomplished martial artist, he negates all he has done for the arts by letting his ego get the best of him.
