| Actually the second amendament was a gaurantee that citizens could bear arms for state militias, making it impossible ( in theory ) for the federal government to abuse its power with federal troops. Hand guns and thier use by criminals wasn't even an issue to be considered at that time. The thinking by a lot of the conservatives is "the right to bear arms" means any arms at all. The thinking by a lot of liberals is that is means only shotguns and rifles. Guns that have a purpose other than killing humans. I think like most things the answer is somewhere in the middle.
