If you are in a competition, you are by definition there to win. The improving and all that comes during your training so you can win the competition.
If you are out in 'da streets,' (enough with the "combat" talk unless you are serving in the military, please) then 'losing' means getting killed or having your ass broken, not "self-improvement."
