it works the muscles in your hands and improves your dexderity (sp?? ability to manipulate) in your hands. the balls come in larger sizes as you become better at handling them. but it is mostly used for relaxation and meditation. it is like in buddhism when you use dharmma beads to meditate, the act of moving the bead over in your hands gives your mind something non-distracting to focus on that will help relax the mind and assist with meditation. also sometimes the chineses balls have chimes in them (mine do) and the gentle noise is also suppose to calm you and give you a calming focus for meditation.

Supposedly, when you move those 2 balls in the palm of your hand, they are supposed to pin point certain pressure points in your hand.

I wouldn't doubt that it basically massages the muscles in your hand as you work them out, but I don't know about pressure points on the palm being hit by them.

What i meant was that acupressure points were hit. Each point relates to another part of the body. So some book I read mentioned it being related to acupressure.

Possible as different parts on the hand and foot correspond with different areas of the body, but I thought that it required more pressure than just the weight of a little ball. Also I though it required more direct pressure than a ball could generate. Then again, my knowledge of accupressure is not exactly universal, so I could be wrong.

what? you are a fellow hapkidoist, you should be an expert!

no there would not be enough pressure, and the pressure should be concentrated to a specific spot. honestly, the most common use for the balls is stress resease. you are suppose to grind them together to release your frustration.

I've heard that they activate certain pressure points in the hands, but I'm not sure about that. I've been using Chinese medicine balls for about 15 years now (bought my first pair in Hong Kong), and I can assure you that, if used properly, they do help with hand dexterity, soreness in the hands and forearms, and stress.
You can use them with either hand, but it takes a little practice to get used to rolling them in your left hand if you are right-handed.
As for cost, I think you can get a pair for about $5 in most import shops.

The balls are overated....

They are made of different sizes. Usually someone who has vast knowledge of them would assign the proper ones. If you just bought them as a common sale, then you may have the wrong ones for you.
