I never said,"only." I said that it was indeed a field of medical study. Who do you think brought it into the Martial Arts, soldiers? Chinese medicine was part of learning Martial Arts, and many Sifus are Doctors as well. Learning how to heal as well as how to cause injury was all part of being a Sifu. Let me add, that not every Sifu learned TCM. Some learned basic trauma and injury healing, some never learned any. The Sifus that knew TCM were also the ones that knew Dim-Mak.
Sure, there are people that know some points, and we all see the guys who are on yutube and giving seminars, but true in-depth study of dim-mak requires not only memorizing a few points, but how each point affects the human body. You need a grounding in anatomy and physiology, knowledge of the acupuncture points and the meridians, the five element theory and how they apply to the human body.
That is not to say that learning several point locations is not effective, and you would be right in calling that dim-mak. All I am saying is that it is an incomplete definition, and now has been taken as fact, and is a term thrown around by alot of people who really don't know what they're talking about.

Do you not consider one who studies karate but hasn't mastered it one who doesn't practice karate? An incomplete knowledge of an art doesn't mean it's an entirely separate art, if these people on youtube know the points but not the effects then they know a part of the art, not a completely separate thing. To not understand it is only a fault in their path to mastering it, but does not send them in a different direction. I am in no way saying that people on youtube who say they practice Dim Mak actually do. You dismiss anyone who doesn't have the knowledge of a doctor, yet people can study Dim Mak formally and be taught all of that, and you ignore this fact.

no, you are not getting my point. I am not saying you need to be a doctor. I am saying Dim-Mak is not a separate style that stands alone. It is a spoecialized skill, which is used within an art.
Well, if we're going to be splitting hairs, I guess you could say that a specialized skill is an art in itself.
The problem is, people, including some on this board, use the term dim-mak as if it were a stand-alone style.

Well i agree with you that many people use the term incorrectly, but i didn't mean that you said they need a doctor. Just that your expectations for one to be considered practicing Dim Mak were a little high.

That's the million dollar question. Very hard to train your Dim Mak in a sparring situation.
