Chin Na

Chin Na

The word Chin: meaning to seize, trap or to catch.

The word Na: means to hold, grab or to control.

there being Chin Na is a Chinese method of grappling it utilizing animals like the eagle and how it catches it prey. Chin Na is an art that works on transition. It is the distance that presence the best opportunity for the Chin Na practitioner to use defense first and then offense second. As I have read Chin Na is broken down into four categories

1> Chin Na Basic Hand Methods: seizing, locking choking, piercing lifting, twisting, parting, breaking separating muscle, squeezing and hugging.

2> Passive Chin Na: Escapes from grabs and holds from a stationary passive opponent.

3> Active Chin Na: applied in combat situation.

3> Chin Na with an armed opponent: Needs expert timing and skill.

Categories Of Chin Na Techniques

1> FEN JIN-Separating muscle and tendons from their bone. ZHAUN JIN- grabbing the muscle and tendons

2> CUO GU-Breaking the bones

3> BI CHI- sealing the breath

4> DIAN MAI- pressing/sealing the veins

5> DIAN XUE-Cavity pressure "Chi Channels"and Na XUE-grabbing the cavities

In my opinion Chin Na is an outstanding system of self-protection, which requires no previous martial art experience.

here is the link to the web site i found the info on: http://www.martialartsinstitute.com/index.html

Thumbs up

Yes Chin Na is awesome and one of the 4 major catagories of Chinese Martial Arts.
Kicking (Ti), Striking (Da), Wrestling (Shuai) and Seize-Controlling (Na).

It is easily incorporated into most any Martial Art Style.

I have read:
Analysis of SHAOLIN CHIN NA
by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming

An excellent book an I recommend it to anyone
interested in Chin Na.

Great subject, hope to hear from some others.

I don't know about Shaolin Kempo,
but it has similar origins to American Kenpo or EPAK
which has quite a bit of Joint Manipulations and Depth Penetrations.

These are usually taught much later to advanced rank students,
some schools don't teach much of it, while others hint around it
and expect the student to learn by showing some initative.

What I like the most is the feedback!!!!!!!!!
When you apply a joint lock or seperate the tendons correctly YOU KNOW IT,
conversely when you apply it wrong YOU KNOW IT also.
It works or it don't!

Same with BJJ you know when you have the hold or move applied correctly and most defiantly so does your opponent ha-ha!

Some scholars believe that it was the foundation and forerunner for Ju Jitsu

Interesting info. I see Chin and get reminded about the origin of the name of China.

47MartialMan beat me to the comment about it possibly being the forerunner to Jujutsu. It is entirely possible since Japan was borrowing from the Chinese(culture/language, etc.) for a long time in their early history.

Ssssh, Japanese martial artists dont like to read/hear this.

You can't imply that some Japanese actually visited China or India.......
