Chinese Martial ArtsDiscuss Chinese style Martial Arts here - Chinese Kempo, Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Pa Kua Chang, San Shou, Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Wushu
What's in a name?
Let's face it, with Shaolin in the the title, it sounds cool and could get people interested in the martial art so all credit to them if it is a good system!
There is never any need to be embarrassed of a good martial art, it's just a shame there are some narrow minded people that don't take the time to learn about something before putting it down.

Kempo/Kenpo is a different bread of martial art. The word kenpo is used in Japan to identify CMA's much like the word kung fu is used here. So to say that some one does Shaolin Kempo is no different then saying they do Shaolin Gung Fu. People add the term Shaolin to show it's orgin perhaps to pay respect and, definitely to cash in on the popularity of the Shaolin name. I've seen Choy Li Fut schools that say they teach Shaolin Gung Fu and in fact they do since the art was named after it's creators Choy and Li. Wing Chun is also associated with the Shaolin temple since it's origins are unknown. So I would say yeah go ahead and say you do Shaolin Kempo because if the forms you do come from a Shaolin art such as Choy Li Fut, Hung Gar, 5 ancestor or any other Shaolin branch art you are practicing a Shaolin martial art.

I study both Xiaolin (shaolin) Gong fu and other non shaolin derived forms such as Xing Yi, the concept of "Do" meaning way in both japanese and korean is not chinese. I study true Xiaolin not this rubbish most schools do, Five style animal gong fu and iron fist for me! Using the name Xiaolin for anything but Xiaolin is like saying a wolkwagen beetle and a Mercedes Benz are the same car.......in conclusing....awwww what the heck let my five animals do the talking!

So you live in a monastery, follow monastic rules, and also live in an amazing time machine that allows you to train Kung Fu in a time before the second burning of the temple on Song mountain and yet live in a time that allows you internet access? True Shaolin? please the wu shu practiced in the temple now isn't true shaolin. And besides if you're doing five animal you're not doing Shaolin you're doing Sil'Lum.
I still say Shaolin Do it up dude and be proud of it.

Well, it actually is. In Kanji, the Japanese reading of road is michi and the Chinese reading of it is Do. But of course, the Chinese readings(On Yomi) of Kanji are a little Japanised during time. The original form of the word Do is Dao in Chinese, as far as I know.

Yes i see what you mean, actually its prounced Tao and is the basis for Taoist belief, the original application wat religous and until 1650's was not generally included in martial concepts as buddhism held sway in the era. Your point is quite valid, my meaning though is that it is not as pronounced as in korean and japanese martial culture.

Five Animal is actually Shaolin. Sil Lum (Little Idea)is Shaolin too, but came after five animals.
Tao = the way
Dao = blade or knife
Many westerners confuse the two terms and some even use them interchangably, though they have different meaning.

Huh? Trying to learn, but I don't speak it. Most words and terms I know well are Mandarin and related to my Wing Chun training or some philosophy. Imagine that!
