Most five animal/five ancestor forms are southern in origin from systems like Hung Ga and Choy Li Fut. I know my Chinese stuff too!
True though some movements are quite diffrent.

Hung Ga and Choy La Fut are family styles of Shaolin. The roots are from Shaolin, but then the families took and trained those styles. So you have outside influences as well as shaolin.
Look at Hung Ga and then the tiger and crane forms of shaolin. Its pretty apparent where Hung Ga originated from.
There are some diffrences though between north and south, mainly masters have just given them thier own personal flavour so to speak

Yes there is a difference between northern and southern styles, and yes I know Hung Ga and CLF are shaolin systems. I'm just saying that these systems have the most popular versions of five animal and are not direct temple systems.

I study both Xiaolin (shaolin) Gong fu and other non shaolin derived forms such as Xing Yi, the concept of "Do" meaning way in both japanese and korean is not chinese. I study true Xiaolin not this rubbish most schools do, Five style animal gong fu and iron fist for me! Using the name Xiaolin for anything but Xiaolin is like saying a wolkwagen beetle and a Mercedes Benz are the same car.......in conclusing....awwww what the heck let my five animals do the talking!
