Sanda/ Sanshou

I've tried researching this style but I still don't really know much about it. I'm quite interested in trying it out as it seems quite a good style, it's either sanda or kyokushin. Your inputs?

Both are good styles. It depends on what you are looking for from an art.

I want something that is quite sport based, but has got it's use in self defense, but not so orientated in self defense, like krav maga or jujitsu.

If that is the case I would say Sanda if you can find a qualified school around you. Also Muay Thai would be good. Traditional karate will more then likely be 30/70 on sport/ self defense. But go check out both see how they run class and make your decision from there.

Is sanda a full on stand up game like muay thai? Does it manipulate elbows and knees?

My statement on what to train/styles is almost the same;

Find something close to you and what you can afford. Just start, and when something else comes along, then go for it.

Both are relatively close and yeah I should check out the price, and I should go for a sampler lesson.

But I do want a less formal martial art. I mean, respecting everybody obviously, but something without a strict uniform, and just something more of a... Club than a lesson if you get what I'm saying.

ummm Guys, Sanda and San Shou are not "styles."

San Shou is a type of sport kung fu. It scores for strikes and throws. It used to score for throwing the opponent off the lei tai, but most matches are now held in boxing rings, making that rule obsolete. These are full contact matches. Example of a great San Shou fighter is Cung Le.

San Da basically means full contact fighting. In my opinion, any kung fu school should have some San Da at a certain level of training.

Calling San Da and San Shou styles are like calling MMA a style. Its so much more...and less in some ways, than a codified system.

Anyone claiming to teach either of these as a style would make me very nervous to train from.

What do you think of this WC?

CGK Academy

Is there a sort of Chinese equivalent to kickboxing?

Nice post.....but I may add, calling Kung Fu a sport or martial art is like calling it a style.

The use of San Da and San Shou in the context used on the site worry me. The lack of mention of certification worries me. If I had to guess, I would say the head instructor has some training in TKD, WC, and Hung Gar, then decided he was a master worthy of teaching. In my opinion, he probably did not reach a true Sifu rank. Honetly, this site just set off all kinds of alarm bells.

San Shou is kung fu kickboxing.

Thanks for the advice.

Hmm... What I meant was, kickboxing as a style, as in a school that teaches 'Chinese kickboxing'. I don't know why, but I really do want to study something Chinese, probably because of my origin, but I want something more laid back, less concentrating on getting belts or wearing uniform. Judo's plenty formal enough for me, and my club is quite relaxed.

Could it be said that it is Chinese Kickboxing?

Without Googling WC, have you ever heard of "Splashing Hands"?
