General Martial ArtsDiscuss General Martial Arts here
Hi everyone. I new to all this. I have never taken any type of martial arts and I've always been really interested, but have never had the time to learn. I want to start to study some type of martial art. Would anyone have any suggestions as to where I should begin?
It's hard to say which style is the best style to begin with and all the advise you will hear will be biased by their own background, which is also the case with my advise on taking Korean Martial Arts, just because that's what I did.
I think the most important part not which one you start with, but to sticking with it long enough for you to find out what is the best martial arts for you. You will find that many other people have started with one and have changed to something else later that better fit them.
This is just my opinion, but if you can find a studio nearby, the chances of you going there regularly and sticking with it will be much higher. Also, getting a close friend of yours to join with you will help.
You covered that one pretty good, Complete, though i'd like to add that a thing to take into consideration too is wether the goal is; Selfdefence-skills, competition, or just to stay fit.

His idea of being interested, seems casual. For of someone is really interested, they would make the time.....
I argue that often someone’s interest is casual until they try it and then an interest becomes more serious and starts to include goals and a more serious effort.

I don't argue this, though how can they take a interest when making up excuses why they hadnt tried it?

Hey, my post count has the same palaverment tone as anyone elses'
for starters i would go with tai chi it would be appropriate for developing fitness as well as assisting with self defence skills it also helps develop vast amounts of patience( which i have a lack of these days)

I wouldn't go with Tai Chi as it isn't/doesnt train self defense....

In self defense? I would have to say I would look around at some classes and see what style you like so you can come up with an idea what to take. There is some great styles out there, I took a littl eof Tae Kwon Do (Though I dont remember much) but I remember its like a kicking style, the art I am studying now is Chun Kuk Do which has a lot of great self defense moves. But I'd say the best reccomendation is to look around and watch a few classes take some intro lessons and find out whats best for you, which was what I did ^^; Though I only looked at Tae Kwon Do then wen't to Chun Kuk Do.. xD Good luck though!
