I have successfully passed the testing to earn the rank of Blue belt last Friday night! I will receive my Blue belt on Tuesday at the belt ceremony. On a side note, my 7 year old son also passed his testing and will also receive his Blue belt on Tuesday.
In order to pass we had to perform the following:
Do San Form
3 different wrist escapes from an attacker
Answer up to 5 various questions about Tae Kwon Do (for example - what does Tae Kwon Do mean when translated to English? or Show me a front stance and explain everything you know about it. How many moves in Do San? and so on)
We were also required to spar 4 2-minute rounds against each other and higher ranks.
I felt I did well in the sparring, but did not feel particularly sharp in my form. For some reason I felt slow and didn't seem to "pop" my techniques as I think I should have. Anyway, I did pass and this gives me something to try to improve on.
Thanks for the congratulations guys. It is a great accomplishment to have come this far. When I first started, I could barely do 10 push ups, and as for kicks - I couldn't even kick as high as my belt. Now I am kicking at chest level (of a 6' tall person) with no trouble and feel more energy every day. I am 35 pounds lighter and have much more endurance since the start of my martial arts training.
Congrats....how cool to do this with your son too. I just got (3 days ago) my Green and my son is about to test for his Orange. My son is very exited. Good for you both. Keep at it.
One of my favorite sayings is that a black belt is just a white belt who didn't give up.
Rick - that is GREAT! Congrats on your new belt and good luck to your son. I never thought I would enjoy martial arts as much as I do, but I am totally addicted to it. We have been going almost every day of the week to training during the summer (except for vacation week) but will probably take it back to 3 days a week once school starts.

I think thats the only bummer about BJJ. It takes 8.5 months to go from white belt to the next one up blue belt going to class three times a week. Than after that it take 2.5 years to get the next belt purple going three times a week. You have to be very dedicated to make it to black

We joined at the same time. I checked out the local places and found one I liked and took him to it for a free trial class. After the class he said that he liked it and wanted to join. During the paperwork my son asked me to join up as well so we could practice together at home so I could help him out. Turns out he is the one that really helps me out. He has a great eye for watching forms and can tell you almost every little thing you may be doing wrong.
I had done MA many moons ago and had thought of getting back into it here and there. When my oldest (10years) asked about doing it, I decided to do it with him.
We...(I) took our time looking around at the different dojos, so as to find one that would suit his needs, and were lucky to have one near where we live with a good guy for a Sensei.
I enjoy it for my own reasons, but it has been cool to watch him go through everything. He is quite passionate about it, and it's been fun.
Of course, the thing I wonder about is when he gets older and can kick his old man's butt. Then what do I do eh?
