Any particular reason not to try that BJJ school that your friends go to?
I was kind of sceptical about it at first because alota people were sayin that someone of my size could never make it in that school but I want to try it anyways I'm locating the school now ..nothing ventured nothing gained

I don't know much about UFC and all, but a lotta damn heavyweights know BJJ. And are you looking for the old grandmaster said, kinda discipline?

Did the instuctor say you won't make it?
And who is anyone to judge if you could do (or couldn't) something but you.....

That post before mine, was that for post counting? How about the one after?
Hey, my post count has the same palaverment tone as anyone elses'
You aren't really abnormally large, so I wouldn't suggest limiting your options based on size. Also, if you want an art that will give you control, then almost any art will do as well.
There are martial arts places everywhere. Some of them are a bit hard to find though. Also, if a school is in a strip mall or a few stories up in a building, don't count it out. There are lots of great martial arts schools out there that simply don't have good business practice and thus aren't in some glamorous location. The number one thing to remember is: try a free class to get a feel for what it is like. How good was the instruction? How fun was the class? How pushy were they after you took the free intro? After you have tried a few, take your favorite.
heh..my bad wasnt paying as close attention as i should have been to the replies I can aford..pretty much anything my problem is finding everything available to me here in baltimore I know theres a Brazilian jujitsu school really close but Im not sure about the instructor as I have heard from my friends that are students there i researched a kenpo and classical weapons fighting School that is also in baltimore (that one stood out the most to me) but I'm not sure what style to look for...I'm pretty persistant to learn so no matter how far it is if it teaches the style I am persuing I will get there
Welcome 13rawler.
The legit BJJ schools in Baltimore that I know of are:
Baltimore BJJ (Lee Synkowski: Maguilla Purple Belt)
Crazy 88 BJJ (Julis Park: Lloyd Irvin Brown Belt)
Ground Control Academy (John Rallo: Renzo Gracie Black Belt)
Any one of these school is a great choice for training.
John Rallo is a huge beast of a man who has a lot of MMA experience. He is the real deal and has the most upper belts of any of the Baltimore schools.
Julius Park is a technical BJJ wizard, I have personally seen him tear through BJJ competition for years. He is known for his extreme technical approach to the game.
I don't know as much about Lee Synkowski, but his instructor Maguilla is a very good Black Belt from my area and any purple belt under him will be very good.
If you're looking to lose weight any of these programs are going to push you hard and you WILL see a difference quickly.

I was thinking Chinese Kenpo at first but Im not entirely sure what style is good for me ..I'm kind of a big guy at 6'3 and 325lbs ...n I used to street fight ..ALOT and I'm trying to change over my life now and I figured to put all the anger into martial arts I cant find one in Baltimore (where I live) could anyone help me out?
As others have said, check out a few different arts you are interested. Figure out what your goals are. Definitely try out a few free classes at each school/art you are interested in. After that, you will have a much better idea of what you want to do.
Some suggestions that will help improve your experience: look for a good instructor. look at the students in the class, are they nice, will you get along with them? Also, check out the skills of the higher belts, do you want those skills? Does the school spar? Is there contact? is that important to you? Make sure you ask.
These are just some things to look at, but doing this upfront work will save you making a mistake and/or getting discouraged at a school that isnt for you.
