The only martial art involving archery than I have read anything about is kyudo (Actually I've ordered a book on the topic but it hasn't arrived yet). As it sounds like you know, this is budo is all about how it gets their and the only competition is against yourself.

If their are kyudo people here I would love to here any corrections on my understanding.

You'd have to define what a 'martial sport' is in order to decide if archery (in a form you pick) qualifies. Sport implies competition, for me martial means involving some element of a warrior skill (for me).
This is pretty much what I was getting at (although I forgot the name Kyudo .) +Rep for expressing it better than I.

I also like the variations of bow, from recurve, compound, longbow and ofcourse the crossbow with there 200+pound draw weights can provide immense power.Have to be skilled as ever to use them though.

Oh really. Thanks for the information. Can I ask, are competitions based purely on how close the arrow is to the target or are their technique/spirit components as well?

yeah from how close you gwt to the target to how deep the arrow pentrates the target. you have a certain amount of time to get a shot off.

So, using "standard" bows is a lot better, per skill, than using composite/cpmpound bows of updated technology?
