How many battles have you been in?

Enough to know that certainly losing is not cheary, dont get me wrong im not saying you should be happy about loss, rather by what you can learn from loss, if you learn, you improve, if you improve victory can be attained, I have won some and lost some, but the greatest value in a loss is to improve on your weakness, this principle is the foundation of chinese martial arts....namely self improvement.

I believe you may have overdosed on fortune cookies.

If you are in a competition, you are by definition there to win. The improving and all that comes during your training so you can win the competition.

If you are out in 'da streets,' (enough with the "combat" talk unless you are serving in the military, please) then 'losing' means getting killed or having your ass broken, not "self-improvement."

Loosing huh?

When I trained BJJ I went up against this blue belt that beat me many times in a row. During a hour period it took him about 5 min or so to beat me, but I kept wanting to rematch because it started to take him a longer and longer time to beat me. At onepoint he looked at me and said, "dude I can't go on any longer Good F*&king heart kid." We sat for the rest of class and talked. That certainly felt like a victory for me that night.

For me competition was just another form of training. More pressure and the fighting was a bit more intense. While I won't say I didn't care if I won or lost, I will say it wasn't a huge deal to me. I used it more to learn. As a caveat I will say I did not compete professionally or for money, and that would probably make a big difference.

Sake sipper is speaking from a wrestlers stand point, when we would lose it wouldn't be because the other guy knew some secret stuff we could use it was just because we were stupid and got caught. For me and I'm sure for Sake as well that just pissed us off.

Right, or worse yet because he was in better condition.

If you lose and are motivated to improve, train harder, do more than the next guy, that's great; but it doesn't change the fact that you lost (and that losing sucks).

If it was a test of endurance then you seem to have won, but measured by superior grappling - you lost.

Your killing me bro. In the grand skeem of things, if it were a street fight and I got my my teeth knocked out, then yes it would be a lose. But then again if I were merely trying to prevent my family from being harmed and succeeded, then it would definitely be a win. My point was to state that loosing is relative to the outcome you desire. I had no hopes and dreams of beating a blue belt as a 1 month grappler. So for me to out endurance a multi year grappler was a plus.

Bro I'm almost dead, cause your statement was completely accurate and you still don't understand why I said what I did. What was the point of responding to my post if I stated the exact same thing but in other words as you did. I said I lost, you said I lost, I said I felt like I won, you said only if it was a test of endurance. It's like telling that guy who went 5 minutes without being taped by Royce Gracie who was really proud of himself that he lasted 5 mintues, "You still lost." Like saying, "your still a douche bag." Whats the point, that was my point.

Oh I understand. I just think your attitude is more self-satisfying than realistic.

I've been there....I went to Gracie Tampa, and they tossed me around quite a bit on the ground. But....My goal was not always to make the other guy tap. A lot of times, my goal was to simply get up and away. Which I accomplished MOST of the time. That, to me, was the victory I was looking for. So it was still a victory. Now, did I make them tap? Nope...I got close once, but then I let him loose somehow. I learned a lot that night, and therefore, I came away winning. As a person who is not a grappler, I felt I did well....Now, had it been a competition, I would have considered each one a loss other than the fact than I learned something.
