You were there for four years and only learned a few words??!!
70% of Korea speaks english and I was in the Army at the time. I also was in Okinawa for 2 years (USMC) and didn't learn Japanese.
We had this old guy who every evening was practicing his karate at a park off post. He didn't speek english but anyone who wanted to train with him or learn from him was free to do so.

LOL! More accurate to say 85% have studied English. Actually speaking is another matter.
And it might be better to say you were stationed in Korea than that you lived there.
No I made it a point to spend as much time off post and away from Americans. I lived in Korea; had an apartment off post and everything. Though I agree with you, there is a difference.

Lol Everyone* who have been to school have STUDIED English. But if you have been to Korea, you soon notice that the level of English that most people have is very low.
However, in the big cities (Seoul, Busan, Ulsan ++) where there are a lot of foreigners, the Koreans are a bit better in English.

Some of you may know that I'm in 'Nam right now and I'm looking to go to a dojo for the rest of the time I'm here (a month). Problem is I don't speak Vietnamese, do you guys reckon I could be able to learn there? I mean the Judo names are pretty much universal, but other instructions like, "Lift your leg higher." or "Use more hip" well... Aren't. Have any of you had experience with language barriers? Whether that is teaching or learning, all is appreciated. Thanks.
Well, food ain't cheap everywhere in Asia. Anyway, what was your favorite while you were there?
I had some very nice German steak, but there is a restaurant in the Sheraton Hotel chain in Ho Chi Minh. And for about US$30, it's the greatest buffet ever.
