Foreign Training

Some of you may know that I'm in 'Nam right now and I'm looking to go to a dojo for the rest of the time I'm here (a month). Problem is I don't speak Vietnamese, do you guys reckon I could be able to learn there? I mean the Judo names are pretty much universal, but other instructions like, "Lift your leg higher." or "Use more hip" well... Aren't. Have any of you had experience with language barriers? Whether that is teaching or learning, all is appreciated. Thanks.

The head instructor of the dojo that go to(he's a 53 years-old 5th dan guy) oftenly trains with Japanese instructors, and he can't speak English or Japanese. And he doesn't cofnront any hardships with it. He always tells us that movements and attitude works real well in that kinda situations. It sounds like BS when he tells that, but it works

The foreigners at my place don't speak Korean, but they understand everything.

Instead of saying "lift your leg higher", they could just actually stop you and hold your leg up higher into the right postition
Or easier you could bring one of your parents...

I had experienced language barriers from Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. However, the longer one remains in a culture using its primary language, the better the communication gets

We had some language barrier problems in the dojo that I trained at in Japan, but, as was mentioned earlier, those problems were usually overcome when the sensei (who spoke some pretty badly broken English) would physically demonstrate what he was trying to get across to students.

You could be right. I know there were many times that having a stance, technique, or combo demonstrated in front of me by an expert helped me understand much quicker.

And you are forced to spend all your time actually training and not listening to stories about whose teacher's teacher killed 20 guys with his little toe during the war and memorizing 'school motos' and pontificating over ancient texts and such.

Someone left me a nice red box and the comment, "Come on, who actually does that?"

Would the anonymous repper care to discuss?

Training in Israel presents a bounty of difficulties mostly related to me not knowing what is going on. I just get in the back of the line or copy the other students. Tag along with someone who might know a little english. That might work too.

I lived in Korea for 4 years and aside from picking up a few words here and there I never needed to learn the language. You know that saying that 80% of communication is non-verbal. Well it basically is...
