General Martial ArtsDiscuss General Martial Arts here
I think it should only be "Olympic martial arts" and anyone from any style can enter with a few ground rules and we find out who the best martial artist is.
Right....XD
I think its alright with only Judo and TaeKwonDo, as these are the most "sport-like" MA(?)... What about MA Forms in the Olympics? That could be interesting. Would be like gymnastics in a way; You do any form from any MA and you get judged on different thingsXD

Wushu was not a show sport in the Olympics this year. The Chinese were trying to get it put in this year, but didn't get everything in place the IIOC wanted so it wasn't an event.
Wushu is just forms play. Its kind of a cross between gymnastics and martial arts.

yeah i was hoping for wushu to get in the olympics this year. but maybe in 2012????
keeping my fingers crossed.
if it does go in the olympics then it will be just like judging gymnastics.
i mean if they have a sport like water polo or whatever in the olympics then why the heck shouldnt wushu be?
its one of those sports just like gymnastics which takes lots of practice and skill.

Their has also been a push for capoeira to be part of the olympics as well!!!
I recon it won't happen, since it's pretty difficult to judge (if the U.K capoeira nationals are anything to go by). How would you judge it? Difficulty of moves? Beauty of play? Successful takedowns?
I recon it would also be a lot more division between individual groups/organisations rather than countries. Also the Brazilian instructors kinda have a bit of a monopoly going on it.

Ah, Steven Seagull, I bet nobody's thought of that before.
Because there are so many martial arts styles I think there should be a few different events that include all. e.g. sparring ( a striking arts division and a grappling arts division), forms (any martial arts be it wushu, karate, capoeri, tricking) and weapons forms. MO
Styles: mixed martial art style, jeet kune do concepts, currently capoeira and some kick boxing

I've heard that argument about being difficult ot judge as well. Nonetheless I heard even recently that there's still a push even for the next olympic games. As far as judging...I guess it could be a combination of the above. Beauty of play, trikery to set up your opponet and land a strike or at least clearly show it, successuful take downs...all adding a different level of points to tally at the end to a final score. Should be fun and challenging. I'm going to keep an eye out on the talks in the capoeira world about it~
I was very disappointed to not even see any TKD or Judo coverage. Most of the boxing was o.k. at best. I hope next time they show more. I wuold love to see forms comp in any style.
