General Mixed Martial ArtsDiscuss EliteXC, HDnet Fight, WEC, and other general mixed martial arts topics here
Have you noticed in the last few years that some type of mma fighting (ufc, pride, etc) is on TV pretty much every night now? How many of you watch the fights? Do you learn anything from watching those fights? MA fighting popularity seems to be growing so fast.
One of the things I love from watching the fights is that the basics that I learn in bjj are always used as finishing moves. It makes me realize how important it is to master the basics.

mma is very popular, and good training. it is on alot here as well.
dont really learn anything. not a great display of stand up, and i know quite a lot of grappling. it seems to me that in mma, they dont do many submission tecniques, and not much really good technical grappling. all i ever see is a triangle, kimura, armbar, and rear naked choke. mostly just ground and pound.
but still very good, and fun too watch
i had quite a few mma fights when i was younger.

What fights do you watch?
John55,
It proves one of the things that I drill into all of my guys and, that was drilled into me. Basics win fights, flashy tornado kicks are cool but, BASICS win fights.

im not sure what you mean.
i watch many Dream and Elite Xc fights iwatch alot. and many other underground MMA orginazations that go on i also watch and no longer compete in but train some of our students at our judo school, to fight in MMA. here there are many amuteur, and underground MMA and fighting orginazations, and many mixed competitions. like there are all fighting competitions where people from every martial art including mma fight eachother. these competitions happen often.
but more on MMA i teach and have taught some of the students at our judo school standup fighting, and other stuff, and they fight in MMA competitions against other people mostly against people from MMA camps. so i watch those fights. which are sometimes painful, and fun to watch.

so someone who only knows the basics of grappling can beat someone who knows much more than the basics?

yeah i've noticed the growing popularity. may end up becoming as commonplace as it is in Asia for example.
I watch the bouts sometimes, it depends on whose fighting. some of it can be very boring. I like fighters who bring Technical and un-orthodox excitement, like this guy:

You have no proper punctuation. Woe is it that someone maybe be a tad lazy to hit the shift/cap key. I have learned more in my studies than you may realise.

I pretty much watch all of them. I enjoy all the other mma comps better than UFC though. I like UFC but I get the feeling that some of the fighters are going for show sometimes over technique. For example there are some times when they have the back and it looks like a perfect time for a rear naked choke but they want to go for the knockout. Maybe thats just due to my inexperience though. I still love watching the UFC though. I also like the UFC tv show. I learn a lot by watching, especially when I see something I learned in class applied well.
And I agree, the basics are important. I cant remember which one, but one of the gracies says that its more important to practice 20 moves a 1000 times than a 1000 moves 1 time each...or something along those lines.
so someone who only knows the basics of grappling can beat someone who knows much more than the basics?

Anybody really, does that theoretical someone know just more than basics or the basics and the extra knowledge, because it would be obvious he would have the advantage since he knows more.

well... he would have the advantage in knowledge, since he may of been practicing longer, but their is still the skill aspect, and luck, and such.
if you pair up two judoka one knowing only the basics, which are some throws, and very minimal grappling, against a judoda who has much more experience, much more grappling techniques, and more effecient at throws then im going with the experienced judoka.
as would everyone else. no smart person unless they know something hiiden about that person would pick a white or yellow belt, to beat a brown or black belt.

Can you really go against what you said? Somebody who has more experience (knows more than just the basics) will pretty much always beat somebody with less experience (somebody who knows just the basics), depending on the situation. This idea may be exempt if the more experienced fighter was a child against an adult, or a similar comparison.

i simply asked a question. im not goign against what i said, and gave no signs of such.
the other exception would be a lesser experienced person who is naturally skilled. among other things that we as human are not in control of.
