What happens if you're natural weight is in the middle of a range? Will you put on and lose?
I would cut to welter or light weight depending on the amount of fat and water weight I had. Look at Sean Sherk he walks around at about 185lbs and cuts to 155lbs.

Yeah, at least 185! I've heard he is close to 200!
Sean is definitely a better fight at lightweight than he's at welterweight. He's probably strong enough for both weight classes but his height and reach disadvantage is greater at welterweight. Even at light weight, he was definitely disadvantaged at stand up fight against BJ, both due to reach and skill.
Wow, I like all these reasonable posts about cutting and not the usual "I would never do that" "It's stupid" "You'll kill yourself" stuff that the topic tends to bring out.

We may not agree on every topic but we are all civilized and educated bunch of people here who can agree to disagree.

I think that the idea is that you want to cut to the top of the lower weight class because cutting effectively eliminates dead weight (like water) where as gaining weight quickly usually involves packing on more fat that you normally would want to during a bulk period.
I'm 5'9" and to be honest it's not so much my height as it is my reach. For the way I fight I like to be on the inside of my opponent, an opponent that is 6'2" while they would actually be easier for me to take down it will be harder for me to close the distance. With an opponent more in line with my height we have about the same ranges and, I can utilize my strengths more readily.
As far as the training and fight weights go, when I train for a fight I train 5 to 6 hours a day as well as work a full time job. My girlfriend would kill me if I did this everyday and that is the whole reason
My return to fighting is something I've been thinking about for a while. At the age of 33 I realize that my glory days are pretty much done and, I'm some what civilized now so I don't have dreams of UFC gold or anything like that. Plus I love my role as a coach, I like helping young guys learn to fight and one thing since I don't focus on my training I can really focus in on theirs. I'm a low level pro fighter with a bum knee and, I'm cool with that. But to be honest with you I feel like I have 3 or 4 fights left in me and I have a few things left that I'd like to accomplish.
I don't know if I answered your questions or just ranted. Hope I answered at least part of them.
You def answered my question. And I must add I dont think I could afford a girl friend and my training. So I dont know what my reasons for not training more are .
So what is the cutting process? I've never been involved in a sport thats required it. Although by the end of most seasons you weigh a lot less than you did at the beginning.

I know that I haven't been in on this conversation much, and as a result look like a troll now.....but.....I'll comment anyway. Please remember that these are just opinions, and not experience with such things speaking.
IN MY OPINION, cutting weight is a last ditch effort to fight at a lower weight than you actually are thereby giving you an advantage. I personally, consider this to be cheating. BUT, everyone does it, so it must be ok to do it right? I don't, and never have. Even when I was in boxing. I had guys cut to be in my weight class, and I usually ended up winning anyway. If your training is complete, then cutting will only hurt you in my opinion.

The dude is huge!! I look like a biaotch next to him in some of the picks I have. He has catchers mitts for hands it's ridiculous

It's different for different people. I'm not a big fan of the sauna myself, don't like just sitting around. I run cut my calorie intake. The last few days I'll roll with a sauna suit or trash bag on 24 or 48 hours (depending on how far I'm off) before weigh in I'll have only one cup of water. When I'm thirsty I'll just rinse and spit, or suck on a jolly rancher and spit. The last couple of days really suck.

So then would you say someone who is lifting weights everyday to get more muscle than the would normally have is cheating? What about people who buy stretching machines to increase their flexibility. What about people that eat certain foods or diet so they have more energy.
Cutting weight is no different than any of the things I've listed above. If you are able to withstand the process of cutting, which is hard to do, then you deserve the opportunity to compete at that weight. No different than putting the time in the gym to add muscle. If you have the drive and dedication to do it, then good for you. You have an advantage over those who can't.

Actually Joe, it's not the same. You see, lifting every day is a semi-perminant thing. It develops the muscles over a long period of time, and they stay around for a long period of time even after you stop lifting. The same could be said for stretching. If you have a stretching machine, you are no better off than one who doesn't. Ask Bill Wallace. I trained with him once, and he said when he was younger, he didn't use them. He said he simply stretched while in his off time because he didn't like to waste time. Also, stretching to become more flexible is also a thing which is semi-perminant. I know a woman who is in excess of 300 lbs...but because of her TKD training before she had thyroid problems, she can still do the splits.
Cutting weight is temporary. You gain it back within a day or two.

Wow I thought the guys on Ult Fighter were exaggerating but I guess not. I dont think I could be a cutter. I dont think I have the testicular fortitude ( to quote Mankind/Dude Love) to go through that process. It seems like its worse than the other training you have to do combined.

Trust me, cutting is no joke. I have a lot of respect for the guys who do it, but...I won't do it,or advise it to my students. A couple pounds, 1-3...maybe a little harder workout, but not 15 or 20.
