ALLOW ME TO ADD SOMETHING THAT HAS NOT BEEN BROUGHT UP BEFORE:
There are many benefits to joining the wrestling team. I am fifty, and I was a swimmer in H.S.-although I lettered in Varsity Swimming, I still regret not joining wrestling-even if for only one season.
The skills you learn will stay with you for a lifetime, the wrestling team members are by far, the highest conditioned atheletes in the school. Nobody trains all around stamina, cardio, strength, and power like the wrestling team. You will get stronger than ever before, and it will be fast, explosive strength. Weight lifting does not slow yuo down when it is done using proper training principles.
The guys on the wrestling team stick together like glue. There is no team that offers the comrederie that comes from daily one on one contact, each man helping the other practice and improve-for the betterment of the team.
In school, and after, if you got in a fight, the most you would have to worry about would be if someone bumrushed you and took you down. You had a chance with the football players, but if you came up against someone who was on the wrestling team, you were fuked. They would take you down so fast and hard, and once down, before you could react, they had you at their mercy. In a real fight, they were tops. These are skills that will always come in handy.
There is also the benefit of getting a wrestling scholarship to college.
With a solid HS wrestling backround, you can go into other "branches" of wrestling-collegiate, greco-roman,and of course, MMA fighters who were wrestlers always faired the best.
If I had known the direction my life would take me-30+ years in the Martial Arts, school owner and Sifu, I would definately had taken wrestling.
As far as not liking "jocks" or not getting along with them-don't sweat it. You will be one of them, so it will not be an issue. Trust me, it doesn't automatically make you stupid.

I seen a fight with a wrestler once. a middle school one,but still they trained with the high schoolers since the high school was just up the street.
it wasn't like he was a god and undefeateble like you say wrestlers are.
in fact, i very much doubt that because say you take a wrestler and a kickboxer. depending on the person it would judge who would win, not just because you are on the high school wrestling team, doesn't make you automatically win. it doesn't make you big and bad, and immortal or anything like that. yes htey are good, because of the training they do and the weightlifting and all of that, but just because they do that doesn't mean the will completely destroy you. actually, I'd be more worried of going against a football player than a wrestler because they are bigger and run faster so you can't really outrun them. I still say you should join though. like i said before, It is a great way to improove your other martial arts, and your conditioning.
Also, no offense intended but high school 40 years ago is way different than now. of course they were feared, and cool, and all that, simply because it was so long ago. it is the same today, yeah of course, but there are differences in people now. Teens are more independant and stand up for themselves, and fight back, and walk around without fear of anyone else.
yeah i see about the jock thing. I just don't like being around people that have a problem with me because i don't act or dress a certain way. this type of stuff goes on at my school today.

um..you just contradicted yourself
oh, and just because you're on the team doesn't mean you lose your identity, sense of self or individuality. Our wrestling team had guys who were heads (stoners),hoods,as well as preppies.
But they all met at one point, and they were the most accepting of each other than any other team. If that has changed, then I guess it's your loss, huh?
Wrestling will certainly improve your grappling. I would ask yourself though first, do you wish to compete in grappling tournaments. If so, are they gi or no gi. If its no gi then wrestling will be your best choice. If its gi then maybe sambo or judo would be more beneficial to you. But whichever you do, you WILL learn something which is better than nothing.

AJJ good choice wrestling will be a great help to you not only in your ma endeavors but, in general as well. You will not find athletes that are better conditioned then a good wrestler, that is generally speaking of course.
Little Dragon, your ideas on what wrestling is are very misguided to the point that it's actually kind of sad. I think you should look into wrestling more, maybe not as a competitive sport but, more into what the techniques are and the principals. I can point you in the direction of good tutorial videos if you don't have a near by school of wrestling. Remember being a striker is great but, you have to be on your feet to do that. You should always fight where you are comfortable at but, just from your posts I can pretty much say that even my worst wrestlers would be able to take you down pretty easily, as long as they keep their hands up. Even if you don't want to wrestle it's really the only way to learn good defense and obtain a good scramble back to you feet. Get what I mean?
A lot of people already know this but, to our younger guys I have to say. Your sifu, sensei, master, coach or whatever does not know everything and everything they say is not the absolute truth, they are just people. Feel free to be curious ask questions and do research. This forum is a great place for that so utilize and ask questions with an open mind.
cheers and good luck training.

Yeah, what Triangle said!
I'm a striker. I am comfortable striking and not so much grappling. Having said that, I ask a lot of questions regarding grappling and ground fighting and actually train some of it. If you want to counter something, you must have a working knowledge of it. Theory is not enough. You must have hands on experience to get that working knowledge.
Your fighting is only as strong as your weakest link.
also if not joining it. most schools should let you practice with the team after school even if your not gonna compete
