BJJ injuries

How common are injuries at your bjj school and what are they? I just started and was curious. Rolling, while fun so far, seems pretty injury prone. Are injuries more common for younger or older people? Bigger or smaller guys? Guys with big egos?

I am not talking about simple bumps and bruises...i wouldnt consider them an injury

Injury is just a reality of training bjj. I've never been a little guy when fighting my walk weight was about 190 - 200 and I would cut down to 170 for competition or fights. Now after injuries, beer and life my walk weight is like 235 - 240. I haven't noticed an increase or decrease of injury from size to size. I'd say if you want to avoid serious injury obviously stretch and make sure to tap. But for instance the other week a buddy and me were rolling he went for the twister and me knee just popped out of place. He didn't have the submission in it just popped. BJJ is a contact sport injuries are part of it the most important thing is when you do get hurt give your self ample time to heal and you should be able to bounce back from anything.

Cheers and good luck training

Big egos usually bruise easy. That goes for most martial arts.

Injury is the price you pay for training in a combat/combat sport art. Of course you always take precautions and you want to keep injuries down as much as possible. However, what we do isn't a boardgame. It involves contact, and the more the better.

I have seen a lot of injuries and have had quite a few myself since training BJJ. Most common big injury is usually ACL tear which my girlfriend just did and had surgery for last month. I would say the bigger injuries are usually a fluke thing. Like TRIANGLEFROMGUARD was describing, it's not usually from not tapping to a submission it's usually something weird...an arm in the wrong place, foot stuck in the mat when you try to pivot...sprawl hard on a guy's shoulder...etc. People who refuse to tap and break something is their own fault, that's different.

How do a lot of people tear their ACL? Takedowns? Leg submissions?

I think I can actually remember all of the ones I saw happen:

Failed sprawl. Foot stuck to the mat as person tried to kick the leg back at the same time the person hit the legs.

Guard Jump: My teammate stayed upright as a guy jumped to guard.

Outside foot sweep: Leg stuck in the mat as outside foot sweeps were being practiced.

Hip throw: My teammate attempted a hip throw but the guy instead fell across the outer leg.

Heel hook: Guy went to hard at a heel hook attempt.

People always get the strangest injuries in chaotic fights. Friend of mine was in a bar room brawl in Europe after a football (soccer) match and managed to break his pinky finger.

Yep, it's always something weird like that. My injuries have been:

Herniated disks in my lower back: I tried to push my hips up for an armbar when I was stacked. Stupid.

Broken toes: All in all I've broken 6 toes. Usually this is from my toes sticking in the mat as I pivot.

Severely spraigned ankle: Not tapping to toe holds. Stupid.

Torn meniscus: Pushing my leg in half guard at the same time someone was pushing my knee down. Stupid.

You may find that you get infured a bit when first starting, although once you have trained regularly for a while, you tend to get less serious injuries and just some small niggling ones

Scuffed knees. One summer I was wearing shorts and had a scuffed knee from JJ and one of my uncles thought I was doing hanky panky with a girl on carpet....

my injuries include mat burn on the knees and feet, so tape has become my friend. surprisingly not many bruises and/or much soreness. i did get some small cuts as well and muscle cramps.

i am basically just getting submitted within 5-30 seconds depending on who I roll with, so i dont think i get enough of a chance to get injured. its interesting though, I notice that all the blue/purple belts teach me when i roll with them, they dont go too hard and they tell me what to do and what im doing wrong. The high white belts try to submit me as quick as possible.

I have had more injuries and have seen more in Judo. Just coming off of one now. In BJJ other than a screwed up toe for a while. I haven't had many other than scrapes and bruises.
