Gi Vs. No GI

I LOVE Gi I think it is the best way to learn BJJ. Learning and rolling with a Gi is like playing Chess. You have so many different moves and set-ups. It helps in all aspects of the ground game. Nogi is checkers not as hard!!

NoGi for the past 6 months or so I have not had a Gi and we have been doing straigh nogi. I think my fighters don't get as much Tech. this way. They fight putting the Gi on and it is very frustrating to me. Soon we are going to make them so we can get them competing what do you all think?

I think it makes sense to train for your purpose. If your purpose is to compete within a certain parameter then you should incorporate that parameter.

But then again it makes sense to work with what is more realistic also, meaning people dont walk the street in a gi.

Just my 2cents off the top of my head.

Ah the great debate!

I think over the past 5 years or so of my training I have spent equal time doing both. My experience has been that people who have done gi BJJ exclusively adapt faster to no-gi training than do people who have been doing only no-gi to doing gi training.

Just the pure number of chokes that you never have to learn to defend against without a gi on makes it easier, ya know?

agreed. although with out gi you have to find other methods of staying conected, and it is much slippery.

I agree 100% it is but if you get the foundation of the Gi and then take it off makes it much easier!!

Ebay is another great place to get a Gi... Under $40 sent to your door!

I prefer the GI. At this point I am still new and go to both classes but I like the gi much better. I think its important to know both from SD standpoint. If I had to choose one to focus on, it would be GI.

I have a gameness that I got for around $75 online and I do plan to get a HCK at some point this year.

Thats all I was saying. And stuff like choking them out with their gi, well you cant choke someone out with their T-shirt. I didnt mean they werent capable of adapting at all.

In our submission classes they are always after cardio and normal classes so no one ever wears their gi (especially not during the summer). I personally wear Under Armor or some other long sleeve shirt I got.

What colour gis are accepted in BJJ? Depends on schools?
