I like swimming for endurance, and an hour or so of vigorous stretching of all the muscle groups ( this also helps with muscle tone).

Bottom line is....

You should be at your breaking point when your workout, whatever it may be, is over. If you are walking the same way leaving as you did when you came in then you didnt go hard enough. IMHO.

There are different types of endurance. Mentioned are cardio, strength, etc.

But what is missing is the endurance for pain.

If one cannot endure pain, all the training in the world is not going to help you in a fight.

It is easy to accept and train for dishing it out, but life is not a one-way street of conveninence. One is going to get hit, the cardio endurance may not aid in the pain endurance.

Great Point!

In football my coaches used to say," Are you hurt or injured?" Meaning if you just feel pain then you MUST play through it. If you are injured then you better get the correct treatment. Some of my friends who dont train always say they would " go apesh*t" if something ever happened, I wonder what makes them think they can take it then dish it out.

People talk about the non-resistant dojos in North America like its a piece of cake. Essentially as the bad guy you leave yourself WIDE open for the other guy, and sometimes they mess up badly. I'm heading over to Omega Sports for cup during my lunch break. First occurence shame on you. Second, shame on me.

In wrestling the coach would say "Did he injure/hurt you?"
The reply would be "No I had injured/hurt myself"

What do you mean by "non-resistant dojo"

I'm heading over to Omega Sports for cup during my lunch break. Cup of what?

We dont spar like Karate or TKD, where each fighter is being both offensive and defensive. We have a set bad guy and a set good guy. The good guy always wins and the bad guy always loses.

I need a cup to protect the groin area since we are doing more grappling since I tested into blue belt. I got kneed really hard yesterday during a whirling headlock reversal. Although he did get the initial part of the maneuver correct, which if done incorrectly easily tears MCLs. So I aint too mad at the guy. But we are just learning this maneuver and he was going way too fast.

Ah, but thats the problem, good guys dont always win.

Two free-style, single person, forms that I had created for my tourney students had many tactics showing the forms performer (my student) getting hit. Done by acting where he was getting hit, being thrown (throwing himself, slipping and falling on several kicks,etc.. In the end, one of them had it where the performer was KOed. These forms kinda look like a person possessed by demons from a non-martial art observer. They also seem to place a win. Judges love the creativity and refreshing display.

Wink

Work hard and train hard.

Put ALL your effort into everything you do, from the smallest pattern to the longest run.

as martial man put there is more than one type of endurance

Yet no one has mentioned how to increase mental endurance

anyone heard of chi kung, try standing in holding the balloon position for 20 minutes, its impossible to do at first as you are left with you own thoughts, work your way up from 5 minutes.

Im not saying that running swimming form work etc aren't as important im just giving another view point

after I do chi kung I am always able to fight better, it keep you cool calm collected and therefore saving on physical exhortation

ahh yes my mistake

Iwouldnt advise practising chi kung without a book or master or DVD/video etc

but holding the ballon is this

1. stand in a normal position.. feet forward or slighty out about shoulder width apart, relax as much as possible

2. bring both arms forward hands facing you chest about two fists apart like your holdin a large ballon or space hopper thing

slightly bend kneees to prevent locking, keep as much of you body relaxed as possible, half close eyes keep working your way mentally through your body to relax arease that tense up naturally

its very good for you
