i get really bad back pain sometimes.... i often throw out my back. the trick is to keep working out build up those muscles to give you more support. that and manage your stress, stress can really screw you up physically, especially if you are like me and and your body has a tendency to turn emotional pain into physical pain...... once you have buggered up your back donot train. keep stretching lightly and keep moving about but wear a back support. and also if you can afford it get a massage.

Core body workout. DO NOT DO SIT-UPS! They will screw your back up even more. Instead, get one of the core body balls and do the version of sit-ups using one of those. If you don't have space for that, just do crunches, some straight forward, some with your shoulder angling slightly toward the opposite knee (switch left/right). Stretch, stretch, stretch.
A question for you. When you say lower back pain, do you mean a pain that doesn't allow your back to flex beyond a certain point, a burning in the lower back, or a pain that settles over one, the other, or both hips? I know it's difficult to describe, but the differences in back pains can give me an idea of what problem you've had, and what caused it.
Also, disgruntled's dead on with the stress deal. Your back tenses when you're stressed, hurting already injured muscles and connective tissue.

It depends it is a sharp shooting pain that can be on the right or left side it comes and goes. The pain does not last long but it does hurt. Any ideas?

Is it up in the waist area of the back, or is it more down by the pelvis (just above and inside of the hip joint)?
Up in the waist, it's likely an issue with body mechanics. Make sure you lift with your knees, not your back.
If it's down by the hips, however, it's probably an SI issue. That one is more difficult. In that case, I'd suggest seeing a doctor to get more information about how to deal with it. Back when I worked for an orthopedic surgeon, they couldn't fix the problem (i.e. with surgery), but there was physical therapy, exercises, and in some extreme cases, medication, that could help.
