Instep guards

Do instep guards really reduce the power of your kicks?

I'm just afraid that if I don't wear them I'll kick someone in the elbow again and get this enormous excruciating bruise.

oh.... the power of your kick would not be reduced, but the effect of it might be because you are hitting someone with padding and not your foot. but honestly i do not recommend them. it you are doing your technique properly you should not be hitting elbow. thus i would be scared that you would continue to go on doing it wrong because it doesn't hurt anymore.
