I hate yoga...

I hate it because the people that do it think they are actually in shape. Note...if you do yoga and run 5 miles everyday I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to the people that worship yoga like its the fountain of youth. A chick friend of mine just turned 40 and is nowhere near getting married. She is about to adopt a kid. Now she's cute I guess but could stand to lose a few lbs if she expects to get married, especially since she has a kid. She just went back to the gym but she wont do anything other than yoga. Argh! Am I missing something, whats wrong with some actual cardiovascular work? Or is it just a hippie being lazy? Anyway I hate yoga and their pompous bs. A lady even tried to tell me to give up martial arts and just take yoga. If she wasnt a coworker I would have laughed heartily in her face.

Anybody else hate yoga??

No I don't hate but I do understand the point you are trying to say. I think its more of a "I did something today!" kinda thing with some people. I have a plan to take Ch'ang Shih Taijiquan and yoga at the same time and eventually just drop the yoga. I find it great for becoming more flexibility but if it came down to it I'd stretch down on my own and just drop the yoga.

Yoga, like cardio kickboxing, MT, and these other "fitness club routines" are over-hyped.

Yoga, if taught properly and from a advanced abhyasi/prefect, develops better meditation, stretches body parts to allow flow of nutrients, and requires hard disciplne.

Anyone who is saying that yoga will help you lose weight is lying or delusional (unless they are saying that doing yoga burns more calories than doing nothing). That being said, by contracting opposing muscles while stretching you can get some muscle tone built out of it (Or maybe I'm delusional about that ).

i hate the way they try to over-hype yoga and mass market it.

the people found in some of those yoga circles and tai chi, feng shuei, tae bo can be some very odd delusional characters.

the commercialized yoga is a shadow of the yoga that is done in India. i was watching a documentary on it on discovery channel last year. it was pretty amazing

I dunno, I did yoga for a bit, don't any more because I had Capoeira before and Tang Soo Do afterwards so it was a bit too much for me.

The way I met the yoga bloke who tok these lessons was I walked into the gym at uni (first and last time I ever walked into a gym), and he was there doing one handed pull ups, and it didn't even look like he was exerting himself.

Although, I do agree that Yogis (in the west anyway) tend to see it as the be-all and end-all of workouts. I don't thing it will help you lose pounds at all. Although, like ballet, yoga will make you very strong and very flexible if done correctly because you're holding some incredibly tough poses some of the time.

It would seem like anything associated with "to join" may have certain misunderstandings

I agree. A lot of people see yoga as the end all be all. If I do yoga I dont need to lift or do cardio. You should be well balanced in everything you do. I do however think that yoga is great for stretching and flexability. A lot of big BJJ people do yoga for that aspect. I also think that yoga is one of the more blatant "programs" that try to incorporate Hinduism into the western world.

Well, I have a abhyasi, prefect, as I study Raja and other practices associated. Though there is a association with Hinduism, we leave that out of the practice.

OMG thank you! It also looks SO BORING, I understand wanting to relax but I am too feisty for that! I need to KICK!!! TO KICK!!! That helps me relax after a work day full of DRAMA (there was lots today) I also dislike it because at the club I go to they use a space very near to the martial art room AND they hell at us all the time for being loud!!! Geer.

Well, I don't think yoga is a "full" workout, but the stretches and the isometrics used are helpful.. but if you were to add cardio and strength training.. then you'd get a better workout.. JMO!
