My name is johan.i am 22 years of age, i live in Trondheim Norway and have always been a martial arts freak on some level or another ..
I practice Hapkido and Taekwondo under Grandmaster Jae Wha-Kim(8dan Hapkido 8dan Taekwondo)..
I resently got my blue belt and have practiced under him for about 2 years now... He has tought me much and i am the only student he has practicing both his styles at the moment..
i have always been training martial arts on some level or another but never really found a style to my liking until i started my training in the Modukwan akademy(GM kims school)
Alittle about my hapkido style:
We use alot of weapons in this style...
Nunchucks,
Sword(katana/shinai),
Staff(bo/rokushakubō)
Eskrimas/Kali(2 bamboo sticks)
We also have Kicks,Grapples, punches, throws, pressure points, locks and defence techniques covering one or several of the formerly mentioned..
Like any other martial art we have Katas/poomse/patterns
And alot of akrobatics.......
To summmarise i would say it is a combination of Taekwondo,Capoeira,Aikido,Escrima/kali,Kung fu,Kendo and Taichi..
Whoa thats alot :S...
Anyway i feel its a good and allround training and the sessions are always diffrent ^^ .
formerly ive practiced:
Boksing.
Kickboksing.
Shotokan-karate-do (orange belt).
Capoeira (learned some from a friend, good for fun on the beach)^^.
Well thats enough about me...im looking forward to using your forum...
thnx...

When you listed weapons, you listed katana/shinai as similar weapons. Do you train with both katana and shinai, or just with one or the other? Most schools do not utilize both, so I would love to hear about one that combines both the full power/technique of the cutting strikes utilized by the katana and the ability to spar allowed by shinai.
Also, I love that someone else knows the full name of the bo.
Translation of "Rokushakubo" is as follows; roku=6, shaku is a unit of measurement that is within an inch or so of a foot, and bo=stick. The full name simply means "six foot stick."
Edit: Sorry, welcome to the forums. Looking forward to hearing more about your arts.
Welcome Atrum!! pleses to meet you... stick around you can get alot of great info on this site .

Does the sun stay in/out for months at a time where your at??
well no,the sun rise and set every day like most other places of the world...however we have terribly long winters here....(half a year long)..and they tend to get quite cold...highest(cooldest) temp here this year was round minus 30-35 degrees celsius...but if you take a 4 hour drive or something northwards from here you get to somewhere you just se the horizon but no sun at the winter time ^^....so not so far off hehe tho...
but the winter days are somewhat dark and short....

well we spar alot with the shinai....but we havent got any blackbelts in our club yet son no katanas...but Grandmaster has given the impression that we will be ordering korean katanas/swords later when more get to a higher ranking to train with..but he said that this would only be with dedicated artists in his school (many just leave when getting their blackbelt in the hapkido part of the club)..but i am planning on staying with this and learn all that i can from him...so maby in a few years...seems like its what he has planned anyways ^^...and im really looking forward to it..thing is that some havent learned to even handle a sword properly and would probably do more damage to themselves, and this i can understand because its something that tends to be very sharp ..looping ur own head off wouldnt be something easily reversable :S...
but in a few years i am hoping ^^...i have diskussed this with him a few times and he seems to have it planned ^^...

Bokken are a good way to learn to handle a katana with less of a risk of injury. There is no edge to it, but it's weighted and curved like a katana, so you know where the edge would be if it's a real blade. It can also be used to learn cut mechanics, the biggest weakness of shinai.
Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you've tried several different things! It always amazes me the large selection of different styles that some of you guys have access to. Here, it's taekwondo or karate.
