I'm 44 now but started training at 43. I'm hanging in there pretty well, and am definitely learning to take a few shots...

Try Wing Chung. I don't practice myself but from what I've seen it's body dynamics rely on speed and balance over strength. Also it traces it's founder from a woman.
Or check out Juijitsu. Great self defence relying on balance and flexibility.
Styles: Western Boxing, Tai Chi, Animal Form Kung Fu, and Wing Chun

Sorry Them, but the founder being a woman is myth and is pretty much being accepted as such by the Wing Chun scholars now. Check out the Ving Chun Museum for some pretty good research into it. The name of the style itself means "New Spring" and was a reference to a rebellion instead of an actual individual.
You are correct on Wing Chun relying on balance, but the speed part is more of an illusion created by proper positioning.
Thanks for the props to Wing Chun. Its cool to see people appreciate it

Myth huh. Good to learn something new. My chick bud who practices Wing Chun wouldn't agree and since she lives in the same country as me and you don't, I'm not gonna tell her.
As for the speed thing being an illusion. Thank god. Now I realise that black eye I got from having my bud punch me five times a second in the face wasn't real after all.

I agree with you, SoCal, that it is never too late to start martial arts. I also tell prospective students and new students all the time that one of the greatest things about martial arts as a sport compared to other sports is the fact that, if you're very lucky, you might get to play football, basketball, or baseball until you're in your mid-30s. However, you can practice and compete in martial arts at one level or another for your entire life.

From what I hear, that VT museum is awesome.
One of my students lives around there.
He went to check it out.
On the myths of martial arts;
Pretty much of them have been "checked"
The "Almighty Internet" works wonders.
Though some people are still "In Denial"
