Japanese Martial ArtsDiscuss Japanese style Martial Arts here - Aikido, Iaido, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Kenpo, Kendo, Kyudo, Kyudo, Ninjitsu, Sumo
did tai jitsu for two years a while back loved it but wasnt a great student
had a year of no martial arts nearly did some terrible things.
joined kung fu martial arts school enjoy it for the last 6 months and practise 6 times a week.
Now taijitsu wont leave my mind, I cravingly want to go back and learn taijitsu but I cant physically do both
Heres the reasons why I want to switch
My kung fu sifu is a great guy who knows his stuff, but I shows lots of favoritism to particular students and can easily not exchange a word with me over 4 to 6 lessons. Also I now this is personal thing but He smokes a lot of weed, its not something that bothers me but the side effects show and he gets stuff mixed up and forgets things a lot. (this isnt some kind of personal vendetta against him but I know how important a sifu/sensei is to learning)
The kung fu I do is 5 martial arts into one this means im leanring
wing chun
shaolin
tai chi
chi kung
san shaou
thats a lot.. that means if I trained in taijitsu the amount I have to train in kung fu then my skills would improve 5 times over, I know it sounds like the easy way out but Id rather learn 1 art really well instead of 5 arts not so well.
this sounds a but stupid but Ive always loved the ninja martial arts, when I did taijitsu i was too young to realize that it was a ninja martial art (I assumed ninjitsu only) now ive done reasearch about it I found out it was in fact one of the ninja arts, which makes it seem that much more amazing.
I know thats a lot but I thought id ask you lot about it and see, I dont want to just give in to my impulsivness and drop kung fu, but I really want to try out taijitsu again
Im going to a lesson soon and if I decide to switch I will talk to my sifu he probably wont be impressed.
anyways what are all your thoughts on the subject. critisize me as well please for my lack of loyalty i feel terrible for it
It sounds like your sifu has a lot of problems that make it difficult for you to maintain your respect for him. Respect is always a two-way street. Whether or not you are doing your part (I have no way of knowing this. You're the only one here who can make that determination), he is not.
If you are having this kind of problem, you should definitely check out the tai jitsu and see if it's something you want to get involved in again.
Good luck

it sounds like the sifu is not the best. if that is the case, you might not be getting as much out of that school as you would like. i understand that it is hard to give up learning 5 styles, but if you concentrate on one you will progress faster and can always take up one of the others again once you feel you have progressed in tai jitsu. in the end do what will make you happy!
I think this is half my problem, as I can never decide weather its me being over sesetive about small issues, I definitely have respect for Him and I hope I show that.
I guess I will just have to try the taijitsu and see what comes of it.
From what you described, you are not being over sensitive by reconsidering.

A sifu who smokes weed now i've heard it all. To be fair i know what its like and it is addictve and you feel like you enjoy it. But as soon as you come off its so much better. I personally would go for the taijitsu
exactly, and it is for sure going to be affecting his health and fitness. Not a very good role model to students, A sifu should know all his students and chat on a regular basis, he should be a friends aswell.
yes thats the thing I know he is busy with many other students but He'll hapily spend an entire session with the seniors and just leave the juniors to go through forms on thier own, I understand he needs to teach his seniors but how are we meant to improve if hes not there to tell us how???
hmm that souns pretty bad, you'll never know if your making errors or how to improve, i would quit personally but its your choice. He should do one session with seniors and a separate session with Juniors or have other instructors
yes I think he should as well also seperate classes for wing chun and shaolin the two arts are completely different from one another and its difficult to combine the two
By any means i need to stick to the kung fu reasonably to see of I would prefere the tai jitsu, heres the plann
I have three kung fu lessons a week.
Monday
Tuesday
Friday
Il try the taijitsu once a week for two or three weeks, I used to go to the dojo and most students go on thursdays and mondays but Il start by going on the thursday, that way for a few weeks ill still be having the three martial arts classes but I wont be able to afford to go to both dojos, ill then decide on one or the athor
Its sounding to me like taijitsu may well win though

Keep in mind that your there to learn, and it's your responsibility to make sure that happens!!
On average, I usually ask 3 to 4 questions per class (sometimes more with completely new material).
I will walk over to Sensei and ask him to demonstrate a technique or to prove that something works (I don't always blindly believe), sometimes he tries to get away when he sees me coming with that look on my face (Ha! Ha! Ha! ), but I'm not always a "PITA", sometimes I wait to till class is over to ask questions, because he is going over a very important concept with everyone in the class. It's my job to learn, it's his job to teach me and I make sure of it.

WELL IT SHOULD BOTHER YOU!!
Just a word of advice, be careful with your accusations on a public forum,
because what you mentioned above is illegal and can have a profound effect
on someone's life.
I do prefer some styles over others, but I'll take a great teacher over
a particular style anyday.
