Taijutsu - present day fighting system.
Taijtsu is a non competative, traditional martial art - I wont go into to the lineage because it will differ from school to school. For now suffice to say the style was born in japan (or at least the name of it) and made its way to the UK.
jujitsu
Probably the largest part of the style as I know it - the basic principle is to evade-control-disable in self defence. Students practice at varying levels of resistance, often starting at a lower level of resistance in order to practice technique. Much of the focus is on ensuring any opponent has been hurt using strikes before throwing them and then controling on the ground.
aki jutsu
Not dis similar to aikido, although unlike aikido it is more acceptable (and encouraged) to harm the opponent, in the akijutsu students utilize wrist throws and locks - Again the focus is in technqiue.
stand up fighting
Students utilize a range of striking technqiues, pucnhes, kicks (especially low leg kicks), palm strikes, knife hands, hammerfists, elbows, and knees are all included along with biting, headbutts, eye gouges and forearm strikes - The blocking system involves both traditional forearm blocking, open handed, circular blocking and the infamous shin blocks. The striking technqiues are often practiced on pads and shields, and then applied in jujitsu.
throwing
why hit someone when the ground can do it for you? throwing is practiced extensivly in jujitsu, basic throws such as the outside leg reap, body drop throw, hip throw, shoulder throw and sacrifice takedowns like the three quater throw to name just a couple.
ground fighting
Its a large part of the system basic groundfighting techniques are practiced often such as the full mount, side mount, sixty nine, scarf hold, full gaurd, half gaurd, butterfly gaurd rear naked choke, arm bars, ankle locks, figure fours, key locks, the vital bridge. Also striking on the ground is practiced with gloves.
sparring and grappling
Students spar with gloves on to varying levels of resistance, provided both students agree they are free to go fairly hard on one another, others prefere to focus on technqiue - as a general rule you hit your opponents as hard as they hit you.
Grappling is a large part of the sytem, sometime students grapple with gloves so as to practice hitting on the ground as well, once your opponents taps the round is over and you start again, grappling begins from a kneeling position.
kata
Kata form a large part of the system, studetns must know the kata and the application of the moves they are performing. Kata includes ibuki breathing
grading
The belt sytem has been described well, students grade every 6 months provided they have been training regularly
they must demonstrate basic techniques including stances and openhanded techniques, students must perform kata depending on thier grade, body skills such as rolling and cartwheels, jujitsu and aki jutsu defenses against an attacker, weapons work (for higher belts) against an attacker, free fighting showing technique and control, and after these students are required to demonstrate fitness through various excercises (higher intesity, higher belt) and then answer some questions on the style.
A very very dediacated and comptetant student can reach a blackbelt in 6 years - although it is often longer than this.
juniors
juniors also grade, but when they move into the senior class (16+) they drop down a minimum of three grades sometimes more, juniors can earn a blackbelt, but it is a junior blackbelt - these students then drop down the required grades upon moving to the seniors and it can take a few years for them to then take thier senior blackbelt after regrading for thier senior coloured belts.
The style is quite broad - I enjoy it because I like the teachers style of teaching, also if one day I want to practice kata then thats fine because kata is in the system, but if the next day I want to practice groundfighting I can do that because that is also part of the sytem and so on.
if theres a good phrase I would use to describe taijutsu I would say.
'you are only as strong as your weakest part, always practice both sides, balance is key. not only physically but for your mind your body and your spirit.'
but that is just my opinion.
Thankyou for having the patience to read, I hope it was informative
