I'm looking for advice for sparring with a practitioner of ju-jitsu, and my style is Goju-ryu karate. I'm just curious because I have seen a video or two where karateka get beat down pretty hardcore. I also have a friend who practices ju-jitsu and I would like to spar with him some time and know what I'm doing. Any advice?
I also agree. There are actually ways of keeping from getting taken down, but they all involve absolutely brutal strikes, things that you don't really want to do to a friend. Besides, in real life, if you make a mistake, saying "that should have worked" won't help.
If your school teaches goshin-jitsu (grappling techniques), spend time focusing on those, too. Most of them involve breaking out of grapples and following up with effective attacks.

I would say at the very least learn escapes from the ground. But this doesn't have to be in any specific style, lots of styles at the very least, teach how to escape from the ground.
