Japanese Martial ArtsDiscuss Japanese style Martial Arts here - Aikido, Iaido, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Kenpo, Kendo, Kyudo, Kyudo, Ninjitsu, Sumo
I have not too much to say about "self-experimentation" except that it can develop bad habits which would be hard to be rid of when the right instructor comes along.
You say this as if martial arts originating from a feudal society are not habitual...?

Sorry if I seemed little harsh advising you. I'm not use to pointing out weaknesses in others forms.^^

Hmmmn, depends on if we are talking habit or cultural tradition
What's the difference?
The former the personal "style" of an individual - the latter the perpetuation of such by a group of people over the course of generations?

Sometimes social pressure keeps a tradition a certain way, similar to how water will pressure sediment to become rock. With individual habit, there may or may not be such pressure from others depending on the situation of the martial artist in particular. Therefore, individual habit may vary.

Hmmmn....but personal would seem to not be able to be shared, hence "personal"
Indeed, or perhaps "subjective". Any teaching can only really be formed from this basis.
Out of interest, how would you define Cultural Tradition?

Almost the same as Bo Staff.....
I guess it is a cultural continuity. Steadfast comfort of repetition produces tradition, and tradition shapes people's thinking and behavior. The rationality, morality, values, and aspirations of human beings are embedded in the particular cultural tradition in which they find themselves.
