But who says Akai isn't up to it? We get child prodigies all the time, 12 year old doctors and what not. Could at least give him a chance to prove himself before you start flamming.
yes, your absolutley right. after all my doctor is 13!
But who says Akai isn't up to it? We get child prodigies all the time, 12 year old doctors and what not.
First, we don't get child prodigies "all the time," they are very rare. Second, the unbelievably rare 18 year olds who become doctors (No not 12, and I'll assume you mean PhDs) first learn to read and write and then actually go to college and then to graduate school and write dissertations and complete courses of study, etc. They don't just write "Phd" in crayon on a piece of paper and have reasonable adults take them seriously.
Even your example just goes to show how ridiculous this is.
But that's the problem, it doesn't seem to be "based on" anything. If this kid is just making things up off the top of his head, is not Japanese, and presumably has never trained in Japan then whatever make-believe he comes up with would hardly be a Japanese MA, right?
Just 'picking' a name from two words he found in a Japanese dictionary doesn't quite do it.

Reason: typo
Anyway just so this whole message isn't too negative, it would be solid advice for this kid to actually devote himself to a real kenjutsu ryu for a decade or so and get himself to a reasonably high level in that style, then put in at least a year or two in at least two or three other styles and THEN reflect and consider carefully if he thinks there is a need and if he is in any way qualified to 'create' a new style. I suspect at that point he would be rational and mature enough to decide (and would very, very likely decide "no").

I only know how to sip my sake, which is what I'm doing!
Actually, I just finished. I better catch some shut eye 'cause the gym awaits in just over two hours (and the wife will kill me if I stay up drinking [when I'm supposed to be working] any later!).
Styles: Shotokan Karate-do, Kobudo Bojutsu, Ju-jitsu, Kickboxing, Yumedo (a self-styled form of kenjutsu).

I make sure my Sensei approves all of my techniques before I incorporate them into my art. I have his approval; I don't need yours. I made a thread on this so that I could get advice and constructive criticism from the members of this forum, not for flames. What is more childish, I wonder? Discussing the development of a sword art on an intellectual level, or ranting on about how it's "make-believe"?

Alcohol impairs one's sense of judgement. If your statements on this thread are influenced by it, I cannot in good faith take you seriously. You have no right to criticize my username when yours is a symbol of alcoholism.
Oh, and I would have been training at a proper kenjutsu school, if there were any around where I live. I learn as much as I can from all sources and I make sure my Sensei approves of it all every step of the way.

No, you sure don't. Speaking of your teacher, what kenjutsu ryu does he hold high rank in? Just saying "sensei" over and over doesn't really mean anything in and of itself. You could be referring to anything from a Karate teacher with little or no experience in kenjutsu, to a master of flower arranging, to a taxi driver.

That's the problem. There is nothing "intellectual" about a kid (don't be offended by the term) pretending to make up a 'style' based on what certainly seems to be nothing at all, and I expect that when you are older you will see what I mean much better. Rest assured there are no flames leaping from my fingers as I type this, and if you read my previous posts you will see my most sincere advice for you on the matter.

So does being a teenager. I won't drive while sipping sake if you don't make up sword 'styles' while being a teenager, ok?

Ok, good. Ask yourself why you would do that if you could.

My Sensei holds a 7th Dan in shotokan karate. He hasn't spoken of his specific kenjutsu experience, but I know it's there.
If you think I'm going to fail, then why not give it the old 'wait and see'?
Oh, and some actual advice would certainly be appreciated rather than "this isn't going to work at all" or "stop playing pretend". Why not help develop something and build rather than tear down and condemn?
