Ninjutsu, Myths being Busted Today?

Alot of modern "Historians" have attempted to correct what we might think about ninjutsu but some of it is quite questionable. Here are some examples of some of these interesting points. 1). "im involved in a ninja clan college which developed from a clan of ronin. Ninja would never have worn black or swords over our backs." I wonder if he knew about the clan nodachi, something those men would have worn over the back for status?. 2). "Shuriken arn't deadly like in the movies, they were for distraction." I don't think this person knew about poisons to be honest. 3). "Ninjutsu was in fact a source for all Japanese martial arts. It's not like the sports of today." The older martial arts used for training samurai was more likely Sumo which would have been modified for the emporers personal parties. 4). "Ninja were masters of sciences such as chemistry and engineering". I think what we call china had already seen the rise and fall of mechanical clocks, mechanical navigation equipment, printing presses with printed paper money and printed books for the people, multi warhead rockets that would fire out missles with dragons mouths, hand held rocket launchers, honey comb rocket launchers, robotic theatre with dancing androids and android muscians, androids that draw swords, mechanical chariots, automated revolving bookshelves at libraries etc. 5). "Ninjutsu owes the chinese." Most chinese martial art stars of our times had been very rascist to Japan, not on these implied terms. 6). "The Koga Ninja want to death touch my master for showing too much." That's what alot of chinese are believed to be like, not a Koga Japanese speciallty. 7). "Ninjutsu is real fighting, not like a sport you won't learn there". Most sports teach things like how not to break your hand when punching, for example by not using all the knuckles as in ninja fudoken. 8). "These are our secret treasure fists." Those fists are comman in village shiatsu and other places such as the one thumb pressure pushup. That fist is prescribed as incorrect shiatsu practice and not great on a patient. Everyone could be ninja now then. What does anyone else think about this? Any further thoughts (im new.)?

Welcome to the forums.

No, this isn't Draven. His post was way to short.

I would only add one more to your list - 9) "I train in ninjutsu, and, therefore, I am a ninja." Real ninjas haven't existed for hundreds of years. While certain elements of their arts have survived, the ninja now only exists in history books just like the samuari.

Well allow to argue with you; in my typical know it all fashion. Ninja means "One who hides" and is little different then Karateka "one who uses karate" or judoka "one who practices judo." So technically you don't need to know ninjutsu to be a ninja, you just have hide. Ninja was a generic term criminal, soldier, terrorist or assassin

And welcome aboard Expresso...

1. after the height of thier power. alot of clans were wiped out by people such as Nobunago Oda. some went underground. some other clans and factions absorbed themselves into thier other proffessions such as farming, industry, military, school teaching, religious etc. cause theier reign was seemingly over

despite this...scrolls of the menkyo kaiden teacher liceses were still passed on and retained

black outfits that we see in the media at times were influenced by the kabuki theater. but in practice depending on what type of mission or task any color was worn....ie if your in a winter enviroment, white would be fairly appropriate for blending in the snow.

2. shuriken is mostly for close to mid range throwing. and also used in close quaters combat in conjuction with jointlocks and manipulations. sometimes poison was used depending on the particular ryu or school

3. its sort of inaccurate to say that ninjutsu is a source for all japanese arts. but some arts like Aikido and taijutsu have influences from ninjutsu as well as other arts since the founders trained under different people. one noticeable thing is arts like ninjutsu retain concepts and practices that got lost in modern arts like Karate when it became more sport oriented. both ninja and samurai used jujutsu, bujutsu

4. being knowledgeable in sciences and chemistry is accurate. depending on the ryu they specialized in certain areas including but not limited to meteorology, human anatomy. engineering and industrial would be including since they also specialized in other proffesions besides combat

5. i dont understand 5. if im responding correctly Chinese was an infuence on ninjutsu but not an originating point...just influenced an this was mixed with indigneous Japanese arts and tactics as well as other cultures from India, Persia when those ex-patriots migrated to Japan an over the course of time it developed into what we call ninjutsu

6. ive never really heard of death touch kogas. sounds like it comes from people who watch too much Naruto or Sho Kosugi flicks

7.given that its under proper instruction. no not a sport. practical combat and self defense. as well as classical training thats where the classical weapons and techniques come in which is adapted for modern training. but there are some ninjutsu schools who supposedly do "real fighting" and they have what we call "shyt taijutsu"

8. karate=karateka, judo= judoka, aikido= aikidoka, ninjutsu=shinobi,onibawan, buyu, budoka

I have been in touch with someone who is translating scrolls into English and he has said a book will be out in 2010 by Tuttle. It's called The Shoninki. I don't know everything about the Ninja but have been talking to loads of people out it, there are many takes on what a Ninja was because one meaning of Ninja was in the warring period and another was after the war period.

I refer back to my previous post. Mainly because I forgot that I said that, but also because I still absolutely believe it.
