Sumo Videos

Hello!
Just posting a link to a good site, has a lot of good videos of Sumo bouts (only up to 06, and some don't have all the Honbasho included, but it's still got a lot of good stuff).

Sumo videos (streamed, need Windows Media Player or similar)

Sadly I can't seem to find any videos of this years Hatsu Basho and Haru Basho, which is a shame...
If anyone's got any can you let me know? I know Hakuhō Shō won the Haru tournament and I would love to see his bouts.

I'm also posting a link to one of my favourite bouts of his (not from this site), back in the '06 Nagoya Basho where he beat rival Asashōryū (a great fighter but less of a traditionalist, the first yokozuna in history to be suspended from competition, and a mongolian yokozuna like Hakuhō). For those who don't know the two have had some tension, and in '08 Asashōryū gave Hakuhō a 'shove' after defeating him, and Hakuhō then retaliated by shouldering Asashōryū's in the stomach. Tut tut.

Anyway yeah, this is a good if older video of the two of them, some fantastic technique being used here, with Hakuho looking like he's going to go down a couple times. If you watch carefully though, he's just getting underneath for his final move, the Yoritaoshi.

Link to video

As I say I haven't seen any of his performances in this year's Basho but I hear he's done fantastically well in the Haru, and did some fantastic throws - I'm especially hoping to find a video of him performing an an uwate-nage on Kotooshu (that's a fantastic overarm throw, looks like this:

Anyway, sorry for nattering on!

Best of Aki Basho '07

Just thought I'd add in this video, some fantastic ones here - Hakuhō won this Basho (and this is when Asashōryū was suspended, basically pulled a siccy to get out of it but was found entering a charity soccer match!)
The music is a little lame, wish it had some commentary.
Thanks.

Edit: also, you might notice on one of the previous videos (Hakuhō vs. Asashōryū) the crowd throw their seat cushions into the ring. This is technically not allowed, but commonly happens when a lower ranked rikishi defeats a yokozuna, which happened in this case.

Also in this newest video I believe the bout is restarted by the referee (or Gyōji) because they did not rise from the crouch at the same time. Again this is common practice.

I might do a longer post about Sumo, but I doubt anyone would read it *laughs*

Nice work--thank you for sharing-
Thanks so much for this. I appreciate the effort. It really helps a lot.
Glad to hear you're using this: I plan to keep it much more aggressively up-to-date than has been the case in the past, but don't hesitate to let me know if you find errors or need clarifications.
