Japanese Martial ArtsDiscuss Japanese style Martial Arts here - Aikido, Iaido, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Kenpo, Kendo, Kyudo, Kyudo, Ninjitsu, Sumo
Basho - I'm only going for my very first grading end of this month (to yellow).
Joe - My wife also made this point recently. She's training with me (she's very tiny, about 55kgs) and feels that we're not truly mastering the takedowns, throws and breakfalls in our JJJ classes (time limitations). She also reckons that, specifically for women, throws and takedowns would mean more for her as women very rarely end up in a stare-down alpha male bar fight scenario, but rather get grabbed etc by larger opponents (comments on this?).
WC_Lun and John - Thanks guys, I'll spend some time on these schools and see what I can find out. Maybe talk to some students also.
Soul - I'm leaning this way, but want to make sure (as far as reasonably possible) that I'm definitely making the "right" decision.
Shinobi - A mate of mine actually just sent me a link to the Ninjitsu guys's website, so here it is: Ninja SA
Chad - Cheers for the input mate. Now that I've found the site, I've got a much better idea of what goes for what: Syllabus

i checked out the website. i didnt realize your from SA lol. i thought u was from the states. i got to hang out with an SA tkd team couple months ago at a Hanmadang event.
but after reading the site, it did some eyebrow raising. ninjutsu can be spelled with either a u, or an i. but the questionable ninjutsu dojos tend to use "i" like this one.
apparently they were aligned with Koga but detached an founded thier own group due to the issue surrounding Koga that the Last Koga, Fujita Sieko died in the 60s and left no successor.
theres a Jinichi Kawakami whose from the bando-family line of Koga in Japan....but he has no foriegn students authorized to teach outside of Japan. so this groups lineage, even though they have disassociated is bs.
there are koga manuals and some guys use material from that....but it still makes it bs......that would be like me watching some jeet kune do videos, learning the moves and then claiming to be a jeet kune do instructor without the proper licensing and lessons from a legit instructor.
some of the training that they do is cool. they kata stuff that the kids were doing in one video gave a what the f--k factor. besides the bs koga thing with them being pricey
i would opt for the Judo. do you do weapons in your jiujitsu school?

IMO...Judo would work best if you are pursuing more into jiu-jitsu. More adults will join. The ninjitsu will be great if you just want to learn and broaden your MA. But it comes down to what you want and which path you want to take?
When I trained in judo, I did fine with everyone EXCEPT the brown belt and black belts..they could throw me at will. It got harder for them after a couple months but they could still throw me...but like Joe said, it was a different story when we hit the ground.

Judo is certainly a good art for women to learn, when women get attacked the scenario is definitely different than when two dudes get into a fight. Close quarters combat is more applicable for women, in my opinion, than for men to some degree. So yeah, I tend to agree with your wife on this one.

Judo is great. I fractured (a small crack) my right foot's pinky , due to my training mate's lack of proficiency of "where to step" yesterday. Yes, he stepped on my foot while throwing me(ouchi gari). By accident but still, he did it. I won't be able to train for a week. Yes, I'm that manly. They'll pay me great respect because of that.

Oh wow, really? Idk, man. If it were me, I'd probably just stick with JJJ until you learn a little more. And I can say that b/c I've been in the situation. But it's your choice ultimately. If you have to start one or the other, I'd reccomend Judo.

We do not rise to the occasion in combat. We fall back on our training.
You will never learn if you are unwilling to see what you are doing wrong.

He stepped on your foot during Ouchi Gari? What the hell, how did he miss that?? LOL!

I think it's because he's doing the technique wrong. After entering, the left foot should be left a little at the back while doing the reap with the right foot. Both his feet were on the same horizontal line I think, which caused him to step onto my foot.

Thanks for the feedback on the site Shinobi, I would never have picked up on that. Apparently we do have weapons training, but as there are no-one there higher than green at the moment, they don't teach us any so I'll have to wait and see I guess.

The JJJ is great, I love it, but due to restrictions at the venue we have only two hours a week and that simply isn't enough for me (I'm definitely continuing with the JJJ, I just want something else on top of it).

I actually thought of that but held back , since it was too easy

oh ok. thats cool if your gonna get into that at some point & combined with Judo should be a great experience. there seems
to be a notorious amount of "koga" people in SA and thats also one of Ashida Kim's stomping grounds lol. thats another reason i was like go for Judo.

It never fails to amaze me what people are willing to believe about themselves and others.
Well, back to the Judo. We spoke to the Judo instructor last night and my initial estimates of class times and prices was wrong. It's even cheaper than I expected and the lessons are half an hour longer than I thought.
More importantly though, the guy was very willing to answer questions and talk about the way he teaches and ultimately ended with telling us that we're welcome to come and try it out for a couple of weeks and then decide.
