The instructor supplies the environment we need to test fighting in a realistic environment so that we are not swimming on dry land. To swim you get into water. To drive, we get behind the wheel of a car- to learn martial arts, we must fight.
It is an often forgotten fact that Bruce Lee did not agree with schools either. "I've disbanded all the schools of Jeet Kune Do because it is very easy for a member to come in and take the agenda as "the truth" and the schedule as "the Way"". See my signature as to why this is the case. He had anicipated the effect of the Law of Institutionalisation.
Hence, Lee had already realised the problems of people who focus upon the need for an instructor of Jeet Kune Do than to realise that JKD cannot be found in any human being - it is found in realities of fighting.

But, of course, he was taught my living beings, studies through interaction with living human beings.
Therefore, he didnt state to not train from a instructor, but not getting affixed to that one in particular as gospel.
