Metacognition and the thought of the pupil is FAR more important than any instructor. The instuctor is a guide who leads you to the water to drink. It is up to you to drink - study the nucleus, then dissolve it when you liberate yourselve from the structure of that nucleus.

The instructor supplies the environment we need to test fighting in a realistic environment so that we are not swimming on dry land. To swim you get into water. To drive, we get behind the wheel of a car- to learn martial arts, we must fight.

It is an often forgotten fact that Bruce Lee did not agree with schools either. "I've disbanded all the schools of Jeet Kune Do because it is very easy for a member to come in and take the agenda as "the truth" and the schedule as "the Way"". See my signature as to why this is the case. He had anicipated the effect of the Law of Institutionalisation.

Hence, Lee had already realised the problems of people who focus upon the need for an instructor of Jeet Kune Do than to realise that JKD cannot be found in any human being - it is found in realities of fighting.

Proper instruction lays the foundation upon which you can build later. If that instruction is faulty then anything built upon it will be shaky.

But, of course, he was taught my living beings, studies through interaction with living human beings.

Therefore, he didnt state to not train from a instructor, but not getting affixed to that one in particular as gospel.

I think a lot of people miss that he also said one should have a solid traditional base. Too many conveniently forget that.
