| If all you're looking for is real-life defense, (heh. I say "all" like that's such a simple thing to offer) I'd probably go with jiu-jitsu. It doesn't solely focus on grapples. There are also strikes.
This doesn't mean there aren't reasons to pick judo, but they aren't related to self-defense.
