jujitsu - how long to learn enough to put to use in real life?

Im looking forward to getting stuck into jujitsu again (ok, first time was only a month but it was a good month) but im going to a different class this time as they appear to teach more and it doesnt seem as repetative as the previous one.
to be fair i cant remember much from the handful of lessons i had, how long does it take to be confident to use jujitsu on the street in real situations? i only plan on going once a week, i appreciate for some people MA is a way of life, but for me its more of an interest/hobby. its obvious to say the more you go the faster it might take im just looking for a generalisation

you can't really give a time scale i.e one year, because everyone is differnt and not only that we have no idea on how your being taught and what your being taught , so its a bit of an unanswerable question if your aasking about the clubs I refered you to I would say 6 months to a year training twice a week for you to able to have better chance than you did before i.e a locks,a grab escapes got into your head aswell as your run-fu

Well you can take one class and come away confident in your skills or you might take years of training. You can effectively use the art when you effectively understand the art and are confident in that understanding.

i did 1 class off brazilian jiu jitsu! before christmas i did traditional jujitsu for a couple of months but cannot make contact with the club again (only a small one) so assume they have shut down?? its quite a distance, not worth the trip if theyre not there. so i found a BJJ class close to home - did 1 lesson (as i posted up about) but they charge a hell of a lot of money for it, which i personally cannot justify although i did find it very good. theres another club close by that teach tradtional jj and 'brazilian style' (as they word it) jj and weapons - which i'll be visiting this monday with intentions of joining.
