Anyone ever heard of this? In my searches for a style I like and a school that is relatively close to me I came across this place that teaches Minna Jiu Jitsu. Created 45 years ago for the American temperament and personality. Doing searches just brings me back to their website, so I don't know how "real" this is or is it just something that was made up by this guy? Looking for some feedback if anyone has heard of it or if anyone thinks this is legit.
The other thing that makes me question this is that it is governed by the Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the United States of America (JJBBF). While that sounds great it was started by the same person that founded Minna Jiu Jitsu. Virtually all the instructors at the school serve on the board of this federation. Maybe I am reading too much into this and hats off to the guy for starting all of this and making it work.
I'm in Cleveland Heights tansplanted from Chicago and I roll at the Relson Gracie academy in Willoby, there is also a Royler Gracie academy in CH but the schedule conflicts with mine. This place looks kind of sketchy. Where are you in NE Ohio I maybe able to recomend a place.

It looks interesting, I can't really tell if it's for real or not. h

The black belt is not a mark or symbol of the end of the journey to ones mastery of the arts; rather it is the mark that one is done packing for their journey and may now take the first step in their true journey. This a journey which can not ever be complete, only traveled..."

Any place that promotes being a member of an association then it turns out they not only created that association but also populate the board of the association with members of thier school would make me think twice. The best way to see if its a good school is go and check it out. However, alarm bells are already sounding for me regarding the school.

That was exactly my thinking and why I was questioning it.
Good question, I'm still investigating that as well as schools. Back in the mid 90's when I was in the Med on a float we spent 2 weeks in Israel training with an Israeli Artillery unit and they taught us some Krav Maga. That was fun and one heck of a workout. So that interests me and I have checked out the website of the school over in Berea (kind of a drive though). I am 38, 6-1 and about 200lb so I need a style that is going to fit me. I wouldn't consider myself "overweight" but I could stand to loose 10-15 lbs IMO. I have been looking at Jiu Jitsu mostly. It seems like a lot of schools cater to kids though. Is that right? I don't want to be a ninja and don't have an urge to compete in tournaments right now.
Good post Joemoplata, maybe I should clarify mine. In looking at other styles and schools local to me they seem to mostly cater to kids.
Oh well yeah, there are some Martial Arts that are easier and more appropriate for kids and these schools can make their business just off that audience. Some arts have, unfortunately, become associated with being nothing more than Afer School Day Care Centers but not all the schools are like that to be fair. It's easy to judge an art by a few bad apples but the truth is that every art started with "Martial" concepts in mind even if they seem to have been watered down these days.
I would recommend asking when the adult classes are and then going by during that time to see how big the class is, and if it looks like it's what you're looking for. With the amount of people on here and the wide depth of martial arts represented I am sure that people will be able to help you narrow down your choice if you post the name, association and style of the schools you are looking at.

Nope, maybe 10-15 minutes from me. I work in Chagrin Falls, so I have been looking anywhere between there and Mentor all along 271. I have no problem driving to a good school. IMO it is worth it.
