Straw through wood, but paper??
Most people have heard about nasty tornadoes that drive straw through wood. Take a look:
Talk about raw power!
I remember going to a Buddhist meeting with my mother when I was young and one of the old Japanese leader's there was a Ju Jitsu 8th degree black belt. I was fairly new to martial arts myself and I started to talk to him. Two things he said I still remember. First, he said if he got into a single fight, whether it was his fault or not he would lose his belt and never be allowed to train again. I thought that seemed harsh.
We talked for a while and the other thing he said was that he could take a piece of paper and cut through wood with it. That would mean he could cut off a limb or something using a standard piece of paper. That seemed hard to believe, though this was not the sort of person that would make things up. He was very conservative, always wearing a business suit, always with a very serious look on his face, and always thinking very carefully when speaking. He was about 65 years old and had been training since he was little, his Japanese accent was very strong.
It didn't occur to me at the time to ask for a demonstration...my bad. He lives in Oregon and I am on the other side of the world now, so I think it will be hard to arrange at this point. Even though I find it hard to believe, based on his character and how he was I find it equally hard to believe he'd make something or anything up.
Since he practiced Ju Jitsu I placed this thread under the Ju Jitsu section. I am curious what others will say, though I suppose the answer itself will not be known unless we can get footage of someone doing something like this.
PS: I also included the off-topic image below because it looks so cool!
Physics says no to that. Straw goes into trees like that for the simple reason of the power of the tornado being behind it and causing it to be fired like a dart. Sadly even if the power of a tornado was behind a piece of paper i highly doubt it would cut wood. I think he was messing with you there

and the mythbusters themselves showed that while the straws could embed themselves in the wood, even the fastest tornado/hurricane ever recorded is insufficient to put the straws all the way through

I doubt he was pulling a fast one on me, but maybe he was and was really, really good about keeping a straight face. It does seem impossible, I thought about it from time to time...how...the only thing I could conceive of is that is involved slicing and not chopping, and every time I'd get a paper cut I would think back to this. (baffled...)
He could if it was a very very thin piece of wood ... but if it is that thin it is basicly paper and he must be using some heavy duty construction paper to cut it.
On a more serious note I think he was just messing with you. I don't see anyone losing a limb to a standard paper cut. You don't have to think badly about the guy though maybe it was not in a bad spirted kind of way.

Seriously Jozen, do you really believe half the shtuff you post?
If I say it as such then yes I do. Though I am constantly reanalyzing my views, maybe it doesn't seem like it to many but I do. If there is no change it is because I lack evidence to cause a change. Sometimes I find myself saying things that later I think...did I say that.
Regarding this topic about paper cutting through wood, I can't say that I believe it nor can I say that I don't. It is better to say I don't know, it seems unlikely but that doesn't mean I automatically can tell. The guy who told me is well respected by a large community of Buddhists, he gave me no impression that he was making it up.
I think I'll do this...I play with the idea, I never did this before. I'll start with a small piece of wood and try it. If I can get it down...IF IF IF...then I will increase the size of the wood. I honestly don't think he was lying, which is why I am willing to try in the first place. I have nothing to lose but a few seconds each day for a few days...I can afford that...and it would be super easy to set up, we all got wood and paper lying around the house. If after 100 days I get no results I'll post this, if I do I'll make a tape for you tube.
If it were possible, I would think it would have to be a "death by a thousand paper cuts" type of thing. The cutting mechanism of paper is similar to the cutting mechanism of a sword; it slices using motion instead of chops with downward pressure. With all that said, a printing press like the ones they have at a newspaper would essentially act like a ban saw for the purposes of cutting. Having worked at a newspaper (well, trained to work at the newspaper) I am highly skeptical of that result, and so am highly skeptical of the claim.
It is technically possible with an infinite amount of both paper and time
If you had an infinite amount of time, would you really waste it trying to cut wood with paper? Rather I would say just take 15 years of TKD to be able to break the boards... much more efficient.

Or less then 1 year taking Kajukenbo...heck, I could break most boards before that...I am sure many people can. Concrete or reinforced brick...isn't so easy. And if your talking about some hardcore metal...that might take 15 years if at all possible!
That aside...
It probably won't cut the wood. I'll use standard printing paper for any house hold computer printer and a small piece of wood...and no more then 20 seconds of whacking time a day. If I do manage to cut the wood I'll increase the size and report the dimensions of the largest piece I cut...has anyone seen the show Galileo...likely not since it's broadcast in Europe and in German, but they do this sort of stuff all the time on the show, putting claims to the test and then filming the results. One of my favorite episodes was a laptop computer that you could use underwater and throw down the stairs, and it still worked! I bet it's expensive though...

Way to miss the joke.
