Anyways to get an edge in judo?

I'm planning to take judo, but I quite want to do anything I can to help me in it... If I'm making any sense. As in, I've seen judo doesn't rely much on your physical strength, do you need speed or balance? Thanks.

Balance, balance, balance. But don't worry, you will get plenty of practice with this once you start training.

Great physical strength is not a prerequisite, but Joe's right about balance. It's key. Speed in execution is also a great help. Happy training!

Any solo drills to help your balance?

Stand with your arms out, hook one foot behind the other and stand there for 1 minute. Then close your eyes and do the same thing.

Stand on one foot. Then jump and try to switch to the other foot in the air. If you get good at that try to land in the same spot. If you get good at that try to do it on a small raised platform.

I'm not known to be big... Always being called a midget, but I found that my size and strength came useful in randoori. I'm the only white belt in the class, and I managed to beat a yellow belt, he just couldn't put enough couldn't sweep me hard enough, even if I stood still and let him, and I managed to annoy the crap out of a green belt by constantly pulling him off balance and just yanking him in random directions (he replied by throwing me hard. ¬_¬).

Balance

Embusen - foot-work and balance is what me in at the tournament last Sunday. It was the AAU, NJ, State Karate Championships. I did seiuncin. In seiunchi there are two gankaku dachi (crane stances). I lost my balance for a split second and it cost me 1st place. I had to settle for a bronze medal. I contantly practice balance by doing my kicks super slow and holding them out.
Thanks,
Tom
