There cant possibly be a need for so many kata or forms. I mean seriously they are so annoying. All the time spent on kata and forms is time you could have been using to make yourself a better fighter. And I do realize that not everyone's goal is to be a fighter but seriously if you cant fight then there is no point in studying martial arts. You should just play basketball.
And by play basketball I dont mean run through imaginary plays while you shoot and dribble. I mean actually play the sport.
I agree.

I was going to take out some of your post, but I'll leave it as is.
Look, the mind is just like any muscle in your body. If you don't use it, it deteriorates with time and lack of use. I use kata for a few different reasons. 1) to challenge my body. If you aren't out of breath after doing 1 or 2 kata, you aren't doing them right. You're also not challenging your own body or working on muscles which you will use in specific moves/techniques. 2) to challenge my mind. Can I remember them all at a moments notice? No, should I be able to? YES!
Does anyone remember the words martial ART? It is an ART form, not just a FIGHT form. A good fight is beautiful, not just two people going at each other barbaricly. The forms are part of the ART in martial ARTS.
Disclaimer: This is just MY opinion and should be construed as such. It is not a hit at anyone else or their style (or lack thereof)

1) Yes, we challenge our mind and body. Thats a good thing.
2) remember so many moves at once? O. K.
You have a school, train full time. So you can be dedicated to this kata practice. You have time to pursue the art.
However, in a fight situation. It's reaction. Maybe you'll react
well and proper. If you use somthing from a kata, thats fine.
In a fight. I never knew what would happen. I did what I did. And I'm alive today.
For me, thats just too many kata. I'd rather hit bags, spar
etc. All, after work.

You're partially right.
1) yes, I own a school and train a lot, but not as much as I would like.
2) I still work a full time job during the day, so I can't just up and go practice like you would think. My school just doesn't have enough students to be able to support that yet.
When in a fight, I don't do kata either. I fight my butt off. I've been in numerous hairy situations on the street, but each one of them I've wanted to be involved in....for the most part. Did I use moves from my kata? possibly, I really don't remember that far back. I know in one of them I did. Was it exactly like the kata? Not even.
Kata is just that. KATA....No more, no less. It halps with memory (in some systems anyway) and it helps with giving the body a full body workout. Hold a zenkutsu dachi for 2 minutes like we do....you'll feel it after a while. Now, some peoples zenkutsu dachi is not as deep as others. For example, Shotokan has a much higher zenkutsu dachi that ours, so they might be able to hold their stance longer. Ours is very deep, so it's much harder to hold than you would immagine. The same can be said for a niko ashi dachi. That one is very difficult to hold no matter how strong you are...IF you go deep with it. Basicly, as you have stated before in another thread, you will get out of it what you put into it.
Just because a person has a school doesn't mean they actually train either. Often times, they are too busy teaching to be able to train for themselves.

That is exactly true. My Sensei, the youngest 6th degree black belt in our association, gets to train with his Sensei twice a year. Other than that, he's on his own. Between teaching classes and being a businessman to keep the school running, he has very little time to train for himself.

Hmm, this has got me thinking. I take martial arts for fun and for self defence. How much does the self defence involve me being able to fight? Is self defence knowing how to fight and if so, how much? I think I'll make a thread on the subject.
As for people who take martial arts other than to learn to fight, people might enjoy doing martial arts more than they enjoy other activities. There doesn't have to be a point to doing something if you enjoy doing it. Ask anyone who has ever played a computer game in their life.

Yeah, some peole are so narrowed minded:
Martial Arts = FIGHT

That post before mine, was that for post counting? How about the one after?
Hey, my post count has the same palaverment tone as anyone elses'
Neihanchi Shodan
Neihanchi Nidan
Pinan Shodan
Pinan Nidan
Rohai (heavily influenced by kung fu, if I'm not mistaken. It isn't normally a karate kata)
Basic baton kata (our dojo doesn't have a Japanese name for it, but it probably is Nittanbo Shodan)
Jigen Ryu Ichi (Three variations: Straight back and forth, star, and four directions)
Bo warmup
Sannin227, just a little more info on katas. The point, as I have had it explained to me, is to teach a student how to flow between different moves. This is why there are variations on similar katas (the Neihanchi, for example). They utilize similar moves, but sometimes in different orders, or with different aspects to them. These are practiced ad nauseum until the student's body knows the different moves and what can easily follow them. In that way,
the brain only needs to comprehend what should be done next in a basic way, and the body begins to react. It does work, at least for me,
although it does not replace more direct fight training.
Isn't this mushin?
So, when fighting. There is no thought given, you act/react.
Thats why the 1,000's of repetitions enable you
while fighting. To react spontaneously.
