I don't care what anyone says, those are not words that are a part of standard written modern English. People may use them, but that doesn't mean they are correct. I would still mark off for all 3 of those on a high school English final. (Unless it was a 'creative writing' task and they were telling me what a character said.)
Also, this isn't unique to English. Lots of languages adopt words and old words get new usages and contexts. The reason scientists use Latin so often is because it is a dead language so that the ideas of science will only change with the science and not with the language.
So any way... where does Kata come from? It is pretty obvious that no one can find it beyond the English adopted word.
Believe or not, the English languauge has been breaking its "standards"
For examples;
The rule "i" before "e", except after "c", doesn't apply to a few words.
The plural of shrimp was shrimp, but it has been revised to "shrimps"
Even definition of words are not actually correct;
Martial Arts:Any "Asian" unarmed combat systen of fighting.....

: a set combination of positions and movements (as in karate) performed as an exercise
Checking this date, only demonstrates that it was logged/catalogical. But does it actually show its etymology?

In the "circles" of martial art terms and etymology, many come from mainland China, though China has adapted some from Sanskrit.
Even Korea adopted Chinese as well as Jaoabese.

I have learned to regard Kata as a tool box. the forms are learned to create muscle memory, but are by no means meant to be a how to manual on a fight. we learn the Kata and then take pieces of the form to practice in real fight training.
Woah that's a lot of forms. I can't imagine the amount of drilling it would take me to remember that many I only know 10 katas but even those take up a lot of time.
I usually practice 10 per week plus the one I am currently learning. Which is Kakushin. Kakushin is in the same family as numbers 15, 16, and 17. By the end of the month, I have them all practiced and ready to go on. The really messed up thing is that I have to know 10 more to go on to 4th degree. Of course, I have 4 years to learn them.
We only have a total of 15 katas, of which you only need 9 for testings until 4th dan They have a lot of corresponding pairwork exercises though which are also part of the curriculum.
Its one massive combination of applications. This one is kushanku (yes i did spell it wrong), many see it as a dance which is incorrect. They are named after old japanese masters who used the kata's applications to fight with.
kwan ku dai was one of my favorites.

My instructor knows more than I do....and his knows all 120+ in our system. I didn't think he would until I actually asked him to perform some out of the blue and off the wall. He then did them...He's in his mid to upper 70's IIRC. I never doubted again after that. Our system are a bit of "kata collectors" so to speak.
Yeah, we do almost all the sh1toryu kata, the Shotokan kata, our own style specific ones, as well as some others. Then there are the weapons kata which come from wherever we can find em.
There cant possibly be a need for so many kata or forms. I mean seriously they are so annoying. All the time spent on kata and forms is time you could have been using to make yourself a better fighter. And I do realize that not everyone's goal is to be a fighter but seriously if you cant fight then there is no point in studying martial arts. You should just play basketball.
And by play basketball I dont mean run through imaginary plays while you shoot and dribble. I mean actually play the sport.
