ok, as (hopefully) many of you know. A kata isn't just some stupid dance to show off Karate moves, each move shows 3 different stages of applications. Soft, medium and hard. I've been rootling through an old Kata i learnt a while back and got a bit confused at a move, trying to intepret its use as an application. However i've figured it out and want to see if you all came up with the same answers (3 to be exact, thought there could be more) as i did.
The moves, 8 through to 12. Though you could add 13, 14 and 15 on in one some instances.
Heres a video aswell, sorry if its too quick but its how the moves meant to be peformed.
Peformed at about 18 seconds

I agree whole heartedly with the usefulness of forms. I will go a step further and add that the forms display all the useful body motions for a specific style.
Styles: Shotokan Karate-do, Kobudo Bojutsu, Ju-jitsu, Kickboxing, Yumedo (a self-styled form of kenjutsu).

Kata are my weak spot in training. Still, I'd rather kata be my weak spot instead of sparring. So far I only know Heian Shodan and Heian Nidan. I need to master them before I can expect my yellow belt.

"Dan" means degree. Sho means first or small, Ni means two or second, San=3/third, Shi=fourth/four, Go=fifth/five, etc...The Japanese language is abound with compound words. Like my katana's name, Kurosakura. Kuro=Black, Sakura=Cherry Blossom

I think Chapel's getting a little beligerent here.
Good post, rodders. I'll examine when I have time and see if I can come up with interpretation.

Not true, there are several levels of application omote, omote ura & soto ura. Being soft, medium or hard has nothing to do with the application.
Correct it could be used as an arm bar from a thrown, but you could also use it to the head to put the oppenent to their knees, downward strike to the head followed by reverse punch and neck break.
